Bowl-O-Drome
rolls out in style
IT WAS the end of an era at the Bowl-O-Drome in Moiliili on Sunday night. The bowling alley shuts its doors this week after 55 years in business, but management went out with a bang as Sick Dog celebrated his birthday and Neken performed once again in the middle of the lanes as kids bowled on either side of them.
It's too bad management had to throw in the towel -- DJ A2Z had the alley's lounge packed when I stopped by, as a few dozen others played pool and bowled. This party was a nice alternative to some of the other events going on in town on a weekly basis ...
THERE WAS also a good crowd at Venus May 24, as owner Richie Aqui hosted a birthday celebration for himself, the Ocean Club's Dan Punch, the Velvet Lounge's Shawn Ohashi, Gina's BBQ's Sang Han and Ben Yuen.
Unfortunately, I can't tell you too much about what happened inside the party, since I spent a good half-hour watching all the VIPs slide through as I kicked it in line. After a while, I got tired of standing there, so I had to take off ...
IT WASN'T Janet, or even Michael, but LaToya Jackson was in town with Sarina Paris over the weekend for the "Wicked Wahine Tour 2004."
Jackson has a new album, "Startin' Over," and spent the last few days visiting Hilo Hattie stores on the Big Island, Kauai and Maui before attending a party in her honor at All Star Hawaii on Sunday night. A handful of die-hard fans were there as she hung out in a VIP area and signed a few autographs.
At first, I was told I didn't have the right color wristband in order to get a glimpse of the only Jackson family member to appear in Playboy, but thanks to Hot 93.9's Big Teeze I was escorted into the room for a quick meet-and-greet.
That was the only highlight of my visit, however, as rude employees and a bartender who tried to run off with my money had me scrambling to leave shortly thereafter ...
AND WHILE millions will watch the premiere of "North Shore" in a few weeks for a glimpse of paradise, island residents will be watching to see who they recognize as extras on the television show.
Lots of locals are getting a shot at playing bit parts in the series, including mid-day hotties Pomai (of Hot 93.9) and Tati (of Island 98.5). The two were at work last week when asked if they wanted to be on TV. Their answer? "Shoooooots!"
So for two days the pair drove to the North Shore for filming, where they played the roles of female DJs in a nightclub.
Sure, their turntables weren't plugged in, and there wasn't a mixer to be seen, but they got to hang out with a Waikiki beach boy, local surfer Kainoa McGee and some good looking fire knife dancers (according to Pomai). Good times ...
