Laura MacLean makes her Honolulu debut Tuesday.

MacLean booked

Self-described as "a New Yorker in Boston," singer-songwriter Laura MacLean makes her island debut Tuesday night at Anna Bannana's.

She's already made a bit of a name for herself in, of all places, New Zealand, where a song from her CD EP, "Does She Know," did well with on Kiwi radio stations. MacLean has toured the country already this year.

With the help of producer Steve Addabbo, whose worked with such like-minded female artists as Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin and Dar Williams, MacLean's clear-voiced music heard on her EP includes two other songs, "When to Let It Go" and "Prescription for Pain."

Laura MacLean began her music career in Boston when she was offered a full scholarship in operatic studies at an early age, but was enticed to move to the Big Apple due to the enticement of recording projects and singing in a rock band.

That changed when she discovered the Decca period work of Billie Holiday, which made her switch her studies to jazz standards. Hired as a jazz singer for several venues, she then met a local producer who encouraged her writing abilities.

Since then, MacLean has developed her writing and created her own sound in the category of alternative rock, and now co-produces her material under her own label, ElleMac Music. When she isn't on the road, MacLean still performs regularly in venues in Manhattan.
