Jenni Kinoshita, 16, and Angelique Fujimoto, 17, of the Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy hauled weeds yesterday out of an area in Diamond Head State Monument. Almost 100 Youth Challenge students cleared out invasive plant species so that indigenous plants, such as the ilima pictured in the foreground, can grow. This was the fourth year the youth group has worked on restoring Diamond Head in collaboration with the Hawaii Army National Guard Environmental Office.
