The top 10 high school basketball teams,
according to a poll of media statewide.
McKinley leaps three
spots to No. 5 in poll
McKinley shot up three spots this week to No. 5 in the Star-Bulletin's girls basketball top 10 media poll.
The Tigers defeated Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division rival Kalaheo in the league semifinals last week before losing to No. 2 Kahuku in the title game.
The Mustangs, who suffered a second defeat last week in the third-place game to Kaiser, tumbled three slots and switched places with McKinley at No. 8.
No. 4 Iolani and No. 6 Kamehameha both climbed one position.
Despite its third-place OIA finish, Kaiser lost ground, falling one notch to No. 7.
Lahainaluna, No. 10 last week, dropped out of the poll after a Maui Interscholastic League championship game loss to No. 9 Baldwin.
Maryknoll jumped back in at No. 10, even though it has a losing record.
Nine of the teams in the poll are competing in the 12-team state tournament starting tomorrow at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Two first-round games have top-10 matchups -- No. 4 Iolani vs. No. 7 Kaiser and No. 5 McKinley vs. No. 6 Kamehameha.
Also receiving votes: Roosevelt 4, Honokaa 2.
