Rain cancels Hawaii’s
home finale vs.
Fresno State

The Hawaii baseball team hoped to equal last year's victory total of 30 and move closer to this year's goal of 35 wins in the season-ending, home Western Athletic Conference series against Fresno State.

Unfortunately, the win total never changed. The Bulldogs received solid pitching from their starters and the Rainbows did not. Fresno State banged out 28 hits, including nine for extra bases, in winning the first two games 7-2 and 8-4.

The last chance for the Rainbows (29-19, 12-11) to pick up a victory before heading on the road this week was washed away by the constant rains at Murakami Stadium yesterday.

The third game of the series was canceled. It is not known if it will be made up on the mainland.

"I don't know what the repercussions will be and we probably won't know until after Nevada next week," said Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso.

The 'Bows open a seven-game road trip at Nevada on Friday.

"Mike (Batesole, FSU coach) said if we need the game he will accommodate us," Trapasso said.

Fresno State (24-28, 12-11) has defeated UH four consecutive times after losing the opener of the series in Fresno on April 23.

Yesterday's game was scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m. The start time was pushed back to 2 p.m., then a 2:30 p.m. 'drop dead' was established since the Bulldogs had an 8:30 p.m. flight back to California last night.

The Rainbows did honor their seven seniors -- Clary Carlsen, Brian Finegan, Josh Green, Creighton Kahoali'i, Jaziel Mendoza, Andrew Sansaver and Chuck Withers -- with a public announcement of their career highlights. Each player also received a plaque.
