Wilson still in lead at Jennie K.

Hilo's Amanda Wilson maintained her lead at the Jennie K. Invitational, shooting even par 72 yesterday at the Mid-Pacific Country Club. The Waiakea High senior is 6-under 138.

Punahou eighth-grader Stephanie Kono had the second-lowest round of the day, firing a 71. Kono, the defending champ, is three shots back with a two-day total of 141. Kamehameha Schools junior Mari Chun (70-77) is nine strokes back.

Ayaka Kaneko made the biggest leap yesterday to spring back into contention going into today's final round. After a first round of 78, Kaneko fired a 2-under 70, the lowest round of the day, to move into a tie for fourth with Miki Ueoka (71-77) and Kimberly Kim (148).

Murray repeats as WAC discus champ

HOUSTON » Hawaii discus thrower Novelle Murray won the Western Athletic Conference crown yesterday with a personal-best toss of 49.91 meters at the WAC outdoor track and field championships. The sophomore successfully defended her WAC title from a year ago.

The Rainbow Wahine got significant contributions from freshmen Kelly Young, who finished second in the 1,500m with a school-record time of four minutes, 28.75 seconds, and Dana Buchanan, who was fourth in the 1,500m (4:31.11). Young also ran to a fourth-place finish in the 800m (2:07.48). Hawaii tallied 34 points in the meet.

Rice took the women's championship, amassing 161.5 points. Louisiana Tech was second with 155 points.

Mason finishes fourth at golf championship

DELAND, Fla. » After flirting briefly with the NCAA Division II men's golf championship, Hawaii-Hilo's Nick Mason shot a 75 on the final day for a fourth-place tie (7-over-par 295) at the Victoria Hills Golf Club.

J.J. Jakovac of Chico State took the title with a 1-under-par 287.

Trapasso speaks at Quarterback Club

UH baseball coach Mike Trapasso highlights the list of speakers at tomorrow's edition of the Quarterback Club. Rainbow sports announcer Bobby Curran will also speak, along with baseball coaches Ryan Kato (Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Aiea High) and Dunn Muramaru ( Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Mid-Pacific).

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m., with the program following at noon at the Pagoda ballroom.
