Book by Judy Blume wins 2004 Nene Award

The children of Hawaii selected author Judy Blume and her book "Double Fudge" as the winner of the 2004 Nene Award.

"Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo and "Searching for David's Heart" by Cherie Bennett were selected as 2004 Nene Honor Book Award winners.

"Double Fudge" is the story of seventh-grader Peter Hatcher and his 5-year-old brother Fudge, who is obsessed with money. The Hatcher family meets up with long-lost eccentric relatives the Howie Hatchers, who are from Honolulu.

Winners of the 2004 Nene Award essay, poster and performance contests were also honored at a ceremony Friday.

Essay contest winners were Rachel Ray, grade 4, and Tyler Mendes, grade 5, from Kaneohe Elementary School; and Miranda Glenn, grade 6, from St. John Vianney Parish School.

Poster contest winners were Stephanie Lum, grade 4, Maryknoll School; and Sophia Miyoshi, grade 5, and Victoria Ah Mook Sang, grade 6, from Kaneohe Elementary School.

Performance contest winners were: Grade 4 -- "Count Olaff's Dinner" by Christine Che, Kelsie Lau and Troy Wong of Maryknoll School; Grade 5 -- "The Marvelous Marriage" by Brie Adams, Megan Rodrigues and Stephanie Ung of Maryknoll School; and Grade 6 -- "Cooking Dinner" by Dana Tsuruda, Alexis White and Erin Lloyd, Our Savior Lutheran School.

The Nene Award is presented to the favorite book voted by Hawaii children in grades 4 through 6. This year, more than 7,900 children statewide voted for the award.

Waipahu to host family health fair

The Teen & Family Health Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Waipahu United Church of Christ on Mokuola Street, across from the Waipahu Civic Center.

Displays and information will be presented on obesity, diabetes, teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, perinatal and substance abuse education, skin cancer prevention, spinal injury, smoking and lung diseases.

Activities will include wheelchair basketball exhibitions, therapeutic massages, music, entertainment, food and door prizes. For more information, call 677-6939.

State art program seeks local works

The Art in Public Places Program, sponsored by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, is taking applications from artists to submit two-dimensional works of art that reflect the character of Hawaii for a pilot project.

The artwork will be purchased to fill a specific need in the public program's collection.

The application deadline is July 6.

Applications are available online at www.hawaii.gov/sfca or by request by calling 586-0305.

The artwork must be at least 30 inches high by 40 inches wide. Artists must be 18 years or older and reside in the state of Hawaii.

There still were a number of swimmers at Ala Moana Beach yesterday, even with signs warning of Portuguese men-of-war, cloudy skies and rain. Lifeguard Marcus Rice said he saw about 100 of the jellyfish-like creatures Friday, but only a few yesterday.

Men-of-war do battle in Ala Moana waters

At least four swimmers were stung yesterday by Portuguese men-of-war that came into Ala Moana Beach.

Lifeguards counted about 40 of the jellyfish-like creatures off Ala Moana by mid-afternoon.

Rob Miller, of the city's Ocean Safety division, said the animals were blown into shore by this week's Kona winds.

Usually, Portuguese men-of-war stay to the waters off Oahu's windward side. Warning signs were posted at the beach through yesterday afternoon.

Kalihi man arrested for attempted murder

An 18-year-old Kalihi man was arrested yesterday for attempted murder in connection with the May 8 stabbing of a 17-year-old Ewa Beach man.

Police said the stabbing occurred at about 12:56 a.m. May 8 during an argument between the two men in Kalihi.

The victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Center with multiple stab wounds.

The suspect fled the scene, but was arrested yesterday at his Kalihi home.

Liliha girl, 13, alleges sexual abuse

A 13-year-old Liliha girl reported being sexually assaulted by a 21-year-old man.

The man was arrested on multiple sex assault charges.
