"Kaha Ki'i" Congressional Art Competition Awards

Sandy Talioaga, a senior at Farrington High School, won first place in two-dimensional art for "Lili's Recycled Portrait." The work also earned Talioaga "Best in Show" honors.


Creative spirit


Young artists from the 1st Congressional District were honored May 8 during a ceremony recognizing winners of the "Kaha Ki'i" Congressional Art Competition Awards.

The ceremony took place at Honolulu Hale Courtyard, where works by 119 students from 14 schools and one taught by private tutor were displayed.

Nine winners were chosen in three categories as follows:

TWO-DIMENSIONAL ART
First place: "Lili's Recycled Portrait," by Sandy Talioaga, senior, Farrington High School; teacher Lloyd Yamasaki

Second place: "Window to the Future," by Cody Naganuma, senior, Aiea High School; teacher Wendy Larrow

Third place: "Feathered Fancy," by Ma Jemaima (Jamie) Domingo, freshman, Farrington High School; teacher Gail Teshima

PHOTOGRAPHY
First place: "Kau'iahiahi (The Beautiful Night)," by Samantha Boc, senior, Kaiser High School; teacher Maurice Fujie

Second place: "'eha (pain)," by Nicole Naone, junior, Kamehameha Schools; teacher Jim Dong

Third place: "Girl in Doorway," by Kanoe Kaha'awi, junior, Kamehameha Schools; teacher Jan Beckett

COMPUTER-GENERATED ART
First place: "Ku, God of War," by Bryson Luke, junior, Kamehameha Schools; teacher Jim Dong

Second place: "The Elements," by Katherine Tyau, senior, Kamehameha Schools; teacher Jim Dong

Third place: "The Fairy Queen," by Nicole Hanabusa, senior, St. Andrew's Priory; teacher Gary Becker

Talioaga's work also won "Best in Show" honors, and Talioaga will go on to represent Hawaii at the National Arts Reception in Washington, D.C., in July, where "Lili's Recycled Portrait" will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol, along with works by students nationwide.

The competition was launched in 1982 to recognize the creative spirit of American high school students. The competition is open to Hawaii high school students in grades 9 through 12 in the 1st Congressional District.
