Hawaii Beat

Seasiders going for 101 and national crown

One hundred consecutive wins is a milestone, but 101 will be even sweeter for the BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team as it plays for its third straight NCAA Division II Championship today.

The top-seeded Seasiders (34-0) face Lynn (24-1) this morning in Altamonte Springs, Fla., after sweeping second-seeded and previously undefeated Armstrong Atlantic State yesterday 5-0.

Against AASU (28-1), BYUH set the tone after winning the three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead.

"If we had them down 2-1, it would give them some hope. But knowing they had to win five singles matches, they knew it would be a steep battle," BYUH coach David Porter said.

Lynn was the last team to defeat the Seasiders, winning the national title in 2001 and snapping BYUH's 103-match winning streak.

"We're familiar with their players, their styles and how we match up. If we play well, we'll have a pretty good chance," Porter said.

Lynn's lone loss this season was an 8-1 defeat to AASU.

Singletary selected for NCAA coaching program

University of Hawaii defensive-line coach Vantz Singletary is one of 10 minority football coaches invited to the 2004 NCAA Expert Coaching Program on June 1-3 in Indianapolis.

"This is a great opportunity for me to try to help me build a sound foundation to reach the next level," Singletary said. "I'm excited and welcome the challenge of someday becoming a Division I-A head coach."

The program is a collaborative effort by the NCAA, Black Coaches Association, American Football Coaches Association and the National Football League. It deals with leadership training, skill enhancement, networking and exposure to address the shortage of minority head football coaches at the NCAA Division I-A level.

Keynote speakers during the program include former San Francisco 49er head coach Bill Walsh, Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick and Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops.

Hilo's Mason has shot at golf championship

UH-Hilo's Nick Mason shot a 74 to remain in the hunt for the NCAA Divison II Men's Golf Championship at the Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand, Fla., yesterday.

The junior from Wahiawa is tied for third place and carries a 4-over-par 220 into today's final round. He is six strokes behind tournament leader J.J. Jakovac of Chico State University.

Eldredge given Leahey Award

Pal Eldredge was honored as the recipient of the 2004 Chuck Leahey Award last night before the Hawaii-Fresno State baseball game at Murakami Stadium.

The annual award goes to a person who has devoted much of his life to baseball with wholehearted enthusiasm for the sport.

Eldredge played at Punahou and Brigham Young and coached at Punahou, where he won two Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles and finished second nine times. He also has coached Babe Ruth teams and PONY Teams, coached at the National Sports Festival and coached the Manoa Rangers in the Ka Lima League.

Tresnak looking to repeat in Molokai canoe race

Some 100 paddlers are expected to compete in tomorrow's 32-mile Kona Brewing Co.'s Molokai World Championships in single and double canoes and single surfskis. The race starts at 8 a.m. with the course going from Kaluakoi, Molokai, to Koko Marina on Oahu.

Kailua's Karel Tresnak Jr. is the defending men's OC-1 champion. South Africa's Oscar Chalupsky won the men's surfski title last year and Kirsty Holmes of Australia the women's surfski.

Spalding, Colin qualify for Olympic team: Lauren Spalding and Kailua's Kathy Colin finished second in the K-2 event at the Pan American Games/Continental Olympic Sprint Qualifier earlier this month in Curitiba, Brazil. The pair also qualified for the K-4 event with Carrie Johnson and Marie Mijalis, winning the May 1 race by nearly five seconds.

Spalding and Colin finished 2.5 seconds behind the winning K-2 team of Caroline Brunet and Mylanie Barre of Canada.

This will be the second Olympics for Colin, who competed in the K-1 and K-2 races in Sydney.
