Off-duty Maui police return fire,
but no one is injured in the clash
Maui police arrested two men after one of them allegedly shot at a group of off-duty police officers and civilians in Kihei on Wednesday night.
One of the officers returned fire, but no one was injured in the incident, police said.
"We don't have a clear motive that we comprehend at this point," said Lt. Glenn Cuomo, of the Maui Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division.
The group of about 15 mainly off-duty officers was picnicking at the Kalama Park pavilion about 9:20 p.m. when two men walked through the area and taunted the group, police said. The men walked in the Maalaea direction but returned minutes later, according to police.
One of the men allegedly fired a shot toward the group, and the off-duty officers pursued the man, who fled in the Makena direction.
Police said the suspect turned and allegedly fired a second shot at the group, and the bullet struck a private parked vehicle belonging to an officer.
The bullet went through two of the windows and struck a hollow tile wall, police said.
Police investigators later recovered a bullet allegedly fired by the suspect and the shell casing from the shot fired by the officer.
Officers arrested two male suspects outside a Kihei home several hours after the shooting.
Police anticipate charging the older of the two suspects, who they suspect is the gunman, possibly with first-degree attempted murder, Cuomo said. He would not comment on whether a weapon was recovered.
"I don't recall anything like this having happened before on Maui," Cuomo said.
