UHH's Mason at 33rd at golf championship

DELAND, Fla. >> Hawaii-Hilo's Nick Mason shot a 4-over 76 yesterday in the first round of the NCAA Division II men's golf championship. He stood tied with nine others at 33rd place.

Only four players finished under par after the first day's action.

Mason, a junior from Wahiawa, teed off this morning.

Underclassmen win top Wahine golf honors

Underclassmen won the top three awards at Hawaii's annual women's golf banquet last night.

Freshman Sara Odelius was named the Rainbow Wahine's Most Valuable Player. Fellow freshman Dale Gammie won the Most Improved Player award. Sophomore Kari Sur was given the Wahine Spirit award by her teammates for being the most inspirational.

Kai named to US travel roster for Brazil trip

Natasha Kai's odyssey with the United States Women's Under-21 soccer team will continue when the team makes a trip to Brazil for a series of matches May 21-30.

U-21 coach Chris Petrucelli confirmed Kai's inclusion on the travel roster yesterday and said he would be announcing the full roster in a few days.

"I'm excited to be representing my country and Hawaii on another international trip," said Kai, the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine striker who is a little stressed out this week because of final exams.

Kai, who will celebrate her 21st birthday in Brazil, leaves May 19 to meet up with her teammates in Houston.

This is the second international tour for the U-21 players who went to China in March. They conclude their 2004 schedule July 19-30 when they travel to Iceland to defend their Nordic Cup title.

BYUH women still rolling, mens' season ends

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. >> No. 1 Brigham Young-Hawaii swept its opening round match in the NCAA Division II national women's tennis tournament yesterday, while the 12th-ranked Seasiders men's team was eliminated at the hands of No. 4 Valdosta State.

The Seasider women beat No. 11 Valdosta State 5-0 to push their season record to 32-0, 98 consecutive wins overall.

BYUH faces Abilene Christian today thanks to wins by Adrienn Hegedus, Jing Jing Lui, Anna Lewis, Judy Weng, Amy Sun and Gurianna Korinihona. The Seasiders also won all three doubles matches.

The Seasider men lost 5-3 and end their season at 22-7.

Vulcans ousted by No. 4 team: Hawaii-Hilo, which had previously lost only to the nation's No. 1 women's team, BYUH, lost to No. 4 West Florida yesterday at the NCAA Division II national tournament.

"It was super tight," UH-Hilo coach Kula Oda said. "That was probably one of the most competitive matches of the year."

The Vulcans lost 5-3, with singles wins by Dorothee Beauvir and Tiana Lum-Tucker, who teamed up to win a doubles match.

The Vulcans end their season with a 19-6 record.

Iolani alumnus Le'i MWC player of the year

Iolani alumnus Ianeta Le'i, a sophomore first baseman for Brigham Young, was named Mountain West Conference softball Player of the Year last night at the MWC Tournament banquet.

A two-time All-MWC pick, Le'i batted .386 in conference play for 34-17 BYU.

UH-Hilo coaches will conduct 6 summer camps

HILO >> The Hawaii-Hilo athletic department will conduct various sports camps this summer.

Vulcan sports camps will be offered for baseball (June 14-17), basketball (June 23-26), softball (July 16-18) and volleyball for basic skills (Aug. 2-5), team skills (Aug. 5-8) and volleyball coaching (Aug. 5-8).

Camps will be conducted by UHH coaches Joey Estrella, (basketball assistant) Eric Sanchez, Callen Perreira and Julie Morgan.

UH heptathletes record Day 1 personal bests

HOUSTON >> Hawaii heptathletes Patricia Gauthier and Amanda Page recorded Day 1 personal best totals yesterday in the first day of the Western Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championships.

Gauthier stood at seventh overall in the heptathlon standings after four events with 2,473 points, her best-ever score for the first day. Page was in 11th with 2,326 points, also a personal best after the first four events.

The heptathlon concludes today.
