A BIG "MAY DAY" FOR JEFF: Steel guitarist Jeff Au Hoy, right, talked backstage with Jon de Mello and Philana Bouvier after making a stellar debut with the Brothers Cazimero at their 27th Annual May Day Concert at the Waikiki Shell May 1. Au Hoy was a hit in both halves of the show. His renditions of "Pua Mohala" and "Tewetewe" were excellent.

A GREAT NIGHT FOR JAZZ: Valery Ponomarev blew a hot trumpet sitting in with the Honolulu Jazz Quartet at the Honolulu Club last Monday. German bassist Martin Zenker, right, took over for the HJQ's John Kolivas on several numbers. Ponomarev and Zenker were in town for the Eighth Annual Great Hawaii Jazz Blowout and made it a true international festival. Catching Ponomarev in a club was a bonus. His duets with vocalists Azure McCall and Rachel Gonzalez were late evening highlights.

"YOU GO, RAI!": Leah Bernstein, left, got Raiatea Helm smiling before the teenage falsetto diva joined the Brothers Cazimero for what turned out to be a super May Day performance at the Shell. Bernstein told her that Na Leo and Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom also had stage fright when they made their May Day debuts.

Moore/Dr. Madd Vibe addressed topics ranging from sex to racism in engaging style. One highlight piece was "Living the Lifestyle of the Famous but Not Rich."
