Women headline Quarterback Club luncheon

The role of women in sports will be the topic of discussion at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Ballroom.

Scheduled speakers are Star-Bulletin reporter Cindy Luis, UH sports media relations director Lois Manin, KGMB sports director Liz Chun and Kaiser tennis coach Kristie Yamamoto.

The club will also recognize its April Sportspersons of the Month -- UH golfer Matt Kodama and Kalaheo track and field athlete Jessika Ngirblekuu.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. The program begins at noon.

Wahine split doubleheader

Tracie Uchima's two-run single to break a 1-1 tie in seventh inning helped the Wahine scratch out a split of yesterday's softball doubleheader with a 3-1 win over San Jose State.

Melissa Coogan pitched three hitless innings of relief to pick up the win for the Wahine in game two.

The Spartans won the first game 5-1 behind the pitching of Kelli McCollister, who did not give up an earned run and scattered seven hits while going the distance. Three Hawaii errors did in Wahine pitcher Paula Blanning, who gave up just two earned runs but picked up her fourth loss of the season.

Odelius finishes 25th

University of Hawaii freshmen Sara Odelius shot a 78 in the final round of the NCAA West Regional to finish 25th overall with an 8-over 224, missing the cut to play in the NCAA Championships.

UCLA won the regional team championship behind Hanna Jun, who won the tournament with a 209.

Hedin wins silver

Kailua senior Danyelle Hedin won the silver medal in the 55-kg weight class at the Pan American Championships yesterday.

Hedin pinned her way into the finals before losing a 7-1 decision.

Two surf contents scheduled for late May

Teen Extreme Sports will present the eighth annual T&C Surf Grom Contest and the T&C/Surfer Magazine Air Invitational Memorial Day weekend at Queen's Surf in Waikiki.

The Grom contest is open to all amateurs ages 14 and under who will be broken up into three age group divisions. Top finishers in each division will win a T&C bodyboard or surfboard.

The Air Invitational will feature 10 of the top up-and-coming surfers, including two-time defending champion Gavin Sutherland, along with Joel Centieo and Fred Patacchia among others. The contest is also at Queen's Surf and is scheduled for noon on May 29th.
