Synthesis
University of Hawaii-Manoa’s 2004
Bachelor of Fine Arts Show
THERE'S a youthful exuberance to "Synthesis: 2004 Bachelor of Fine Arts Show" at the University of Hawaii-Manoa.
"It's really very refreshing," says Tom Klobe, director of the University of Hawaii Art Gallery. "We tend to find that undergrads are willing to take a chance. There's vibrancy and excitement to their work."
The annual exhibit this year features the works of 37 students in a wide range of media.
"There's everything from glass to graphic design in this show," Klobe says. One student has created an installation using more than 160 envelopes mounted on a wall. Each envelope is half open and shows a different printed material inside. Another student has made some 100 ceramic bird wings that hang from the ceiling "so that the wings look like they're flying in space."
"Super Ordinary," by Laura Laikin Lee, is a piece created with wood, Plexiglas, fluorescent lights and stickers.

The senior project is all about pushing the envelope, and so the assignment comes without the baggage of a pass/fail grade.
"There is really no failure," Klobe says.
"Synthesis" also affords the burgeoning artists the opportunity of putting on an art show, a first-time experience for many of them.
"The students coordinated the whole activity," says Klobe. "They designed the catalog, made the announcements, readied the gallery, planned the reception -- they learned what it's like to be a professional artist."
"Synthesis" runs through May 15 at the UH Art Gallery, located at the Deparment of Art on the Manoa campus. The gallery is open 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. The gallery will be open May 15. Call 956-6888.
Marween I. Yagin's "Mass Produced Intimacy" utilizes dozens of mounted paper envelopes, each with its own piece of art inside.
