Musical plays among this week's offerings
A classical music concert by touring choristers and Bible classics told in song and dance will be among free entertainment opportunities next week as Honolulu churches become concert halls.
» "Holy Moses," a musical play written by Dove award winner Kathie Hill, will be performed at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Calvary by the Sea Lutheran Church, 5339 Kalanianaole Highway. The stage show, and another next weekend, are the finale of a semester of music, drama and choreography classes for youngsters in the Performing Arts at Calvary program, directed by Arthur Harvey, music and worship director.
Thirteen children will act in tomorrow's show, and seven youngsters are featured in the 10 a.m. May 16 performance of the musical "Samson." Both shows are free and open to the public.
» Kawaiaha'o Church will host a 7:30 p.m. Wednesday concert by the 40-member Cross Timbers Civic Chorale. The group from Tarleton State University in Texas will present classical works by Giovanni Palestrina and Franz Joseph Haydn, madrigals by Emma Lou Deimer and folk spiritual music. Conductor Charles Rives has led the chorale in performances in England, France and Italy and with the Fort Worth Symphony.
9 isle residents join Bahai governing board
Members of the Bahai Faith in Hawaii have elected nine people to serve as the governing body for the denomination in the islands.
Chosen for one-year terms on the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahais of the Hawaiian Islands were Anna Smithwick, of Kauai; Jack Spock, of Maui; Terry McVay, of Hawaii; and Byron Hobdy, Chris Cholas, Bijan Yeganeh, Robert Ferrigno, Mollie Sperry and Bruce Desseault, of Oahu.
Members were chosen for the unpaid leadership positions by write-in balloting at the annual convention April 22-25 at Kilauea Military Camp on the Big Island.
A similar election process is held for each of 182 assemblies around the world and for the supreme administrative body at the Bahai Universal House of Justice in Haifa, Israel.
