Star-Bulletin wins big
at Pai Awards
For the second year in a row, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin won 18 awards -- more than any other Hawaii publication -- at the 2004 Hawaii Publishers Association Pa'i Awards.
Winners in 32 categories were announced yesterday at an awards ceremony at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom. The Honolulu Advertiser won 16 awards, six of them for first place. The Star-Bulletin won seven first-place awards.
MidWeek received four awards in the Editorial Enterprise Reporting, Sports Reporting, Feature Photography (newsprint stock) and Best Non-Daily Newspaper categories. The contest, which covered material published last year, was judged by mainland judges.
The Star-Bulletin's first-place winners were:
>> Reporters Craig Gima, Susan Essoyan, Rosemarie Bernardo, Leila Fujimori and Nelson Daranciang in the Spot News Reporting category for "CAUGHT," the April 11, 2003, coverage of the capture of three Halawa prison escapees.
The judges wrote: "One can only imagine the importance of this story to the residents of Oahu -- particularly those living on the North Shore. There must have been a huge collective sigh of relief emanating from the community upon reading the headline."
>> Editorial writer Lee Catterall in the Editorial Opinion category for "Hopscotch Rebellion reaches Honolulu sidewalks." Judges said: "This is a great issue for a local paper to champion, freedom of expression. The writer has a strong, engaging voice. Strong clear statement of opinion."
>> Reporter Rob Perez in the Editorial Column/Department category for "Raising Cane." Judges said: "In the submitted columns, he successfully stirs the pot of Hawaiian public life, exposing ethical violations by state officials who accepted inappropriate gifts and perks. These columns are deeply reported and incisively written. Yet they also display surprising balance and fairness which makes them all the more powerful."
>> Reporters Tim Ruel and Richard Borreca in the Breaking Business News category for "State audit blasts HVCB." Judges said: "This is a significant, timely report on a serious public issue. Reporters Ruel and Borreca are to be congratulated for breaking a story with direct bearing on the public interest."
>> Photographer Dennis Oda in the Sports News Photography category for a photograph of Hawaii surfing legend China Uemura as his stomach was being rubbed by surfer Joey Valentin after the finals in the Longboard Classic at Kewalo Basin. Judges said: "Dennis Oda captures surfing's personality through this feature image. The action and detail is incredible, right down to the two kids in the water in the background of the image. Great job."
>> Photographer Richard Walker in the Feature Photography (newsprint stock) category for a photograph of Imam Ismail El Shikh, spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of Hawaii, in the Manoa mosque with a Quran in front of him. Judges said: "Formal, symmetrical composition supports the serious nature of the subject matter. Lighting falling off in background to emphasize subject. Everything lining up on the center line supports a super-strong statement."
>> Graphic artist Kip Aoki in the Excellence in Illustration (newsprint) category for an illustration reflecting the University of Houston Cougars and the University of Hawaii Warriors for a Hawaii Bowl story called "Taming the Cougars." Judges said: "Great emotion shown in the face of the cougar and the man. Spectacular, imaginative idea and perfect execution."
