Kalani A.D. Miyashiro
unsure of return date
after heart attack

Kalani athletic director Gordon Miyashiro is recovering from a heart attack he suffered in January, according to Kalani officials.

Miyashiro is on sick leave and the date of his return to Falcons athletics is unknown.

"I saw him recently and he said he was doing fine," Kalani baseball coach Shannon Hirai said. "Hopefully, he'll be back for the start of the next school year, if everything goes right."

Assistant athletic director Jason Tanaka and boys soccer coach Greg Van Cantfort have temporarily taken over Miyashiro's duties.

Falcons basketball coach Daniel Kahalioumi said he and other coaches are hoping for Miyashiro's quick return to his health and to his job.

Hirai's baseball team (8-2), the OIA East's No. 2 seed, opens the playoffs tomorrow at home against today's Pearl City-Kalaheo winner.

The team has overcome a lot, according to Hirai, after losing four players for breaking team rules earlier in the year.

"We undoubtedly miss them," Hirai said. "The team was very close going into the season and we're still very close, but a lot of players have had to step up and take on different roles than they expected."

Spartans came on strong: Maryknoll did more than show up for its two Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball tournament games.

After going 1-12-1 in the regular season, the Spartans almost pulled off upsets in losses of 4-3 to regular-season champion Mid-Pacific and 3-1 to Iolani.

"I'm very much proud of this team," Maryknoll coach Duane Eldredge said. "They set a goal to start the tournament with a clean slate and they played like they knew they should have played all year."

Kody Seminara came through with big hits in both games, according to Eldredge, who returns 15 of his 19 players next season.

MLB scout here: Arizona Diamondbacks scout Fred Costello flew in to Hawaii last Saturday just in time to watch Kanekoa Texeira throw a three-hitter to lead Kamehameha past Mid-Pacific.

Costello was highly impressed with Texeira, whom he said has good command of three of his four pitches -- fastball, slider and curve.

Costello wasn't the only scout there. Eric Tokunaga, a Hawaii-based Kansas City Royals scout, was in attendance as he is for many of the big statewide games.

Surfriders vacancy: Kailua athletic director Melvin Imai has put the word out that the Surfriders are looking for a new football coach after last week's resignation of Darren Johnson.

Interested applicants can send a resume to Kailua High School athletic department, 451 Ulumanu Drive, Kailua, HI, 96734. The deadline is May 14.

Three cheers for Kealakehe: Hawaii cheerleading teams continue to gain national recognition. Kamehameha, Radford and Baldwin all won various national titles earlier this year.

Add Kealakehe to that list.

Coach Paula Telles' Waveriders won the American Showcase Championships at Anaheim, Calif., last month in the five-girl stunt routine and in the non-tumbling division, according to the American Championships' Web site.

Three teams left out: Farrington (7-4), Leilehua (7-3) and Campbell (5-5) would have qualified for the OIA girls basketball postseason if the league hadn't changed its rules prior to the season.

To fill the league's new D-II tournament, Kalani (3-8), Nanakuli (3-7) and Waipahu (3-7) get to continue their seasons instead.

Shimogawa in: Former Kauai basketball guard Duane Shimogawa is the new sports editor at The Garden Island newspaper.

The grandson of longtime Kauai Interscholastic Federation football official Kenichi "Stupe" Shimogawa, Duane played for the Red Raiders in the late 1990s.
