4 commit to play football at Western Oregon

Four Hawaii high school football players committed to Western Oregon last week.

Running backs Kyle Beck of Nanakuli, Sy Cullen of Kamehameha, and John Dela Rama of Kapolei and defensive back Derek Mailau of Kailua committed to the NCAA Division II school.

Damien free safety Fehi Sevelo has committed to Division I-AA St. Francis (Pa.), where he has been offered a full scholarship. Kapolei offensive lineman Daniel Otineru has also been offered a full scholarship to St. Francis and plans to make a decision soon.

Pearl City wide receiver and defensive back Nathaniel Nasca has committed to play for Azusa Pacific (NAIA), where he has been offered a scholarship.

Nasca also plans to run track at the school. He won the Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division championship in the 100- and 200-meter runs and the 110-meter high hurdles last month.

Two air riflery standouts signed to compete for Nevada -- Krystle Sze of Sacred Hearts and Eric Okamoto of Saint Louis. Sze is a nationally ranked Junior Olympics shooter.

The Wolf Pack finished second at the NCAA Championships earlier this year.

UH golf team slips to eighth

The Hawaii men's golf team enters the final round of the Western Athletic Conference championship in eighth place after dropping two spots yesterday at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif.

None of the Warriors shot under par as UH posted a team score of 14-over-par 298 in the second round of the three-day tournament. UH stands at 20-over 588 heading into today's final round.

Matt Kodama, Kellen Floyd-Asao and Pierre Henri Soero carded rounds of 3-over 74 yesterday. Kodama owns the team's top individual score at 2-over 144 and is tied for 15th.

Southern Methodist leads the team standings at even-par 568. Boise State's Graham DeLaet is the top individual at 3-under 139.

Vulcans seventh: The Hawaii-Hilo men's golf team remained in seventh place in the Division II West Regional yesterday at Bellingham Golf and Country Club in Washington.

Nick Mason carded a round of 1-under 71 in the second round to move into a tie for seventh place in the individual standings. He enters the final round at 1-under 143, five shots out of the lead. Garrett Okamura and teammate Colin Gilliam are both tied for 18th.

Hilo falls short of nationals

The UH-Hilo men's tennis season ended one win short of the Division II men's tennis championships as the Vulcans were swept by UC San Diego 5-0 yesterday at the NCAA West Regionals in La Jolla, Calif.

"Our guys played well," Hilo coach Kula Oda said. "We just met up with a team that was hitting their shots."

The Vulcans end the season with a 13-12 record while the Tritons are 18-9.
