The end of the school year is quickly approaching, and the beginning of summer vacation can cause many parents to fret. After all, what will the kids do all day while they're on vacation but you're still stuck in the office?
It doesn't take long for kids to get bored. A simple solution would be to enroll them in summer programs enriched with an array of activities.
Programs for various interests -- from art to business planning -- are among the options. Summer vacation can present an opportunity for constructive and positive learning in a variety of different settings.
Remember to make reservations early because slots fill up fast.
ART

Honolulu Zoo
» Vacation Adventures Day Camp: Spend a week on safari at the Honolulu Zoo with behind-the-scenes encounters, insights from zookeepers, animal arts, crafts and games. For children in grades 1 to 6. Children must have completed kindergarten to participate in this program. Offered Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 7 through Aug. 27. Cost is $175, $165 for members.
» Vacation Adventures: Day Camp in Japanese: A bilingual instructor will take children who are not fluent in English around the zoo for arts and crafts, tours and animal feedings. For grades 1 to 6. Runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 9 to 13 and Aug. 23 to 27. Cost is $175, $165 for members. Children will need to provide their own lunch.
» Pre-Vacation Adventures: For younger day-campers, ages 4 and 5. The program is designed for children who have not completed kindergarten. Children will explore the zoo using all their senses. Keeper talks, games, walking tours and crafts are featured, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from June 21 and 25 or June 28 to July 2. Cost is $175, $165 for members. Children must bring their own lunch.

Camp Kokua Children engage in an array of community service learning projects such as beach cleanups, wetlands restoration and making blankets for premature babies, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 26 to Aug. 6 at Hoala School. SNAP ... Summer Nature Adventure Program Educators lead children in a variety of Hawaii Nature Center activities, including forest hikes, fishing, nature crafts, insect safaris, Hawaiiana activities and off-site field trips.
» SNAP I: 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 14 to July 23. For ages 5 to 7 (child must have completed kindergarten).
» SNAP II: 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 14 to Aug. 6.
Cost for both programs is $200 per week for members, $325 for nonmembers. A $20 discount per week is applied if a participant signs up for three or more weeks. Extended care from 2 to 5:30 p.m. is available for an additional $80.
» Environmental Leadership Program: Three-day campouts at Camp Mokuleia take children ages 11 to 15 on a hiking and camping adventure in which participants learn about Hawaiian plants and animals, how to care for the natural environment and develop their personal leadership abilities. PERFORMING ARTS
Honolulu Theatre for Youth "Stage One" Imagination sessions for ages 7 to 12 explore the play-building process from concept to final performance. "Stage Two" for ages 13-18 is a summer theater intensive program called "Grand American Theatre of the 19th Century." Students step back to a time before stories became "moving pictures." Classes will run 1 to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, June 14 to July 23 (except July 5). Stage One will be held at Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Highway; Stage Two will be held at Mid-Pacific School, 2445 Kaala St. Tuition for Stage One or Stage Two is $475 for the six-week term, with a $75 per-child discount for two or more registered siblings. Junior Lifeguard Program Five-day course will familiarize teens with ocean and beach skills. Sponsored by the Ocean Safety Division in conjunction with the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association.
