UH sailors qualify for nationals

The Hawaii co-ed sailing team won the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association team race yesterday at Stanford, Calif., finishing with an 11-5 record. Hawaii finished tied with USC, but won the tiebreaker.

The skippers on the winning team were Joey Pasqualli, Bryan Lake, Matt Stine and Eric Oppen. The crew consisted of Jennifer Warnock, Carly Allen, Kathy Harris and Jeff Boyd. The top two finishers, Hawaii and USC, qualify for the national championships, which are scheduled for May 30 at Cascade Locks, Ore.

UC Irvine finished in third with a 10-6 record and Stanford rounded out the fourth place spot with a 9-7 finish.

Hawaii wins at WAC Tournament

The Rainbow Wahine tennis team defeated Nevada 5-0 yesterday in the play-in match of the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Houston, Texas.

The seventh-seeded Rainbow Wahine (9-13), face second-seeded SMU (15-9) today after their scheduled quarterfinal match was rained out yesterday.

Against Nevada, Hawaii took the doubles point and then cruised to victory by taking four singles matches. Lauren Fitzgerald defeated Bachlan Pham 6-0, 6-3 on the No. 1 court while Renata Camargo handled Christine Tilley 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

The SMU-Hawaii winner will face third-seeded Tulsa in the semifinals later today.

Hawaii men eliminated: The Rainbow Warrior tennis team was eliminated from the WAC Championships after a 4-0 loss to Boise State yesterday in Houston.

Hawaii ends the season at 8-15.

Hawaii eliminated from championship round

The Rainbow Wahine water polo team split two matches on the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in Long Beach, Calif. yesterday.

Hawaii, seeded seventh, beat UC Irvine 8-4 before falling to second-seeded Stanford 10-3. The loss to the Cardinal eliminated Hawaii from the championship round of the tournament and the Rainbow Wahine (13-13), can finish no higher than fifth in the tourney.

Hawaii trailed 1-0 after the first quarter before the Cardinal scored five goals in the second to seal the game. Beth Novick, Darcy Scott-Hosaka and Kristy Bagnall each scored for Hawaii.

Hawaii faces sixth-seeded California today. Cal has won all three matches with the Rainbow Wahine this season.

Hawaii homers past LaTech

Denise Dahlberg and Tyleen Tausaga each hit a home run as the Rainbow Wahine softball team defeated Louisiana Tech 3-0 in the nightcap of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader last night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Shannon Tabion gave up just two hits while striking out eight Lady Techsters (24-27, 7-6 WAC).

Hawaii (25-30, 7-11) lost the first game 1-0. Both teams meet this afternoon in Hawaii's home finale.

Seasiders held scoreless: The BYU-Hawaii softball team couldn't score a run yesterday, dropping a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Western New Mexico.

Western New Mexico (39-10, 15-1 PacWest) won the first game 6-0 and the second 8-0 in five innings. Angela Slaugh gave up just two hits in each game and allowed no BYUH (12-21, 4-10) base runner to advance past second base in either game.
