The 32-member band will be part of the lineup for the Great Hawaii Jazz Blowout.

Jazz from Honokaa

The 32-member Honokaa High School Jazz Band is back in town for a series of concerts.

Under the direction of Gary Washburn, the students perform a standard jazz repertoire including the music of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Hank Mancini and the Tower of Power.

Earlier this year, the band had the pleasure of performing with David Benoit at the Hamakua Music Festival, which brings world-class musicians to Honokaa. As a result, students have had the opportunity to grow by performing for and working with the likes of Luther Hughes, Paul Kribeck, Ernie Watts, Red Holloway, Nicky Harris, Ollie Mitchell, Slyde Hyde and the Olliephonic Horns.

The youths will be performing free at 12:30 p.m. today at Ala Moana CenterStage as part of the Oahu Band Directors Association Jazz Festival.

The band will also be among the performers at the Eighth Annual Great Hawaii Jazz Blowout on the Kapiolani Community College Great Lawn, running from noon to midnight today. The students will take the stage at 10 p.m. Tickets are $15, or $30 for two days as the blowout continues from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow.

The students will also perform at noon tomorrow at Sea Life Park's Sea Lion Cafe. Call 259-7933 for admission information.
