Speakers will address overcoming adversity

Messages on how individuals can overcome adversity in life will be offered by speakers at the annual "How to Walk 2004" conference sponsored by Calvary Chapel Honolulu.

Seven well-known Christian authors and evangelists, including pastors of some of the nation's largest churches, will speak at the May 15 event at Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Ballroom. The New Testament Book of Revelations message to the churches in Asia will be the theme of talks.

Two or More, a Christian pop music band which performs in Spanish and English, will perform. The conference will continue from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Speakers who are familiar to local Christian audiences include Greg Laurie, founder of the Harvest Crusades and pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, Calif.; and Chuck Smith, pastor of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, Calif. Other speakers are:

» Don McClure, founder of Calvary Chapel Bible College.

» Gayle Erwin, author of "The Jesus Style" and other books.

» Raul Ries, pastor of Calvary Chapel Golden Springs, Calif., and evangelist with Somebody Loves You crusades.

» Mike MacIntosh, pastor of Horizon Christian Fellowship in San Diego and Festival of Life crusade speaker.

» Jeff Johnson, pastor of Calvary Chapel Downey, Calif.

Roth's topic is 'Inside Story of Education'

Gov. Linda Lingle's education adviser Randy Roth will speak on "The Inside Story of Education Reform in Hawaii" at the annual luncheon meeting of the Catholic Women's Guild.

The May 22 event at the Hale Koa Hotel is open to nonmembers. Tickets are $16.

May 14 is the deadline for reservations. Checks to Catholic Women's Guild should be sent to P.O. Box 10284, Honolulu, HI 96816-0284.

The meeting will begin with an 11 a.m. Mass followed by lunch in the Laulima Room. For information, call 734-5478.

Hindu opens series of lectures tomorrow

A well-known Hindu teacher and author will begin a series of four free lectures tomorrow at the YWCA of Oahu.

Swami Bhaskarananda, president of the Vedanta Society of Western Washington, will speak on "The Need for Peace and Religious Harmony" at 11 a.m. in Room 105 at 1040 Richards St.

The series will continue at 11 a.m. Sundays. The lectures are free and open to the public.

» May 16: "Quest for the Ultimate Truth"

» May 23: "The Conquest of Death"

Bhaskarananda, who came to the United States from India 30 years ago, is the leader of a teaching center and retreat facility in Seattle. He has lectured worldwide on Hindu meditation and teaching. He is the author of "Essentials of Hinduism" and "Meditation: Mind and Patanjali's Yoga."

His talks are sponsored by the Vedanta Society of Hawaii.

Buddhist group sets sights on harmony

A support group intended to help young adults develop a harmonious relationship with other people and within themselves will be launched next week by the Hawaii Association of International Buddhists.

"Wut's Up in Your Life?" is the theme of the first Youth Intercultural Intra-Connection Program, which will begin at 10 a.m. May 9 at the Jodo Mission, 1429 Makiki St. The opening service celebrating Mother's Day will be followed by an 11 a.m. reception and a noon orientation and introduction to the program.

Gregorian chant class offered at St. Mark's

An opportunity for choir singers to learn and perform the oldest form of choral music in Western Christianity will be offered this month by Una Voce Hawaii.

The "Gregorian Chant Seminar" will be taught May 24-29 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Kapahulu. Classes will begin at 6:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The teacher will be Dan Bradley, of the Gregorian Institute of Guam, who has conducted the Solesmes method of chant for 40 years.

The class is open to singers over the age of 10. No prior knowledge of Latin or chant is required. The cost is $20 for the series. For registration information, call 947-4253.

Class members will have the opportunity to sing the Mass of Pentecost at the May 30 Latin Mass at St. Anthony Church in Kalihi.
