The spring game, Wie
and Charlie Murphy

SCATTERED shots, scattered mind:

» I am deeply thrilled about the return of a "spring game" to the Hawaii football program. And I'm not even entered in the pizza-eating contest.

» Seriously, it's good to do things differently sometimes, but a Division I football program can't go without a spring game. Good move in bringing it back.

» I'm excited about seeing some of the young guys tomorrow night ... which is a good thing, because that's who plays in these things. Patrick Olchovy will make a play that will have you reaching for the roster.

» I was looking forward to seeing Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier in action, with his first somewhat "high-profile" coaching hire (a replacement for Vince Goo). And we get ... a committee?

» Good story on Michelle Wie in this week's Sports Illustrated. Read it. Wherever you stand on the Great Michelle Debate (or if you're just in the middle waiting to see what happens next), it's worth your time.

» Many people think that the fact the NCAA has taken so long to rule on UH's appeal in the men's volleyball situation is a good sign. But is anybody else starting to get the feeling maybe the NCAA just forgot?

Hopefully having the national championship in town next week will make somebody in Indianapolis snap to life: "Oh, yeah, no? Men's volleyball ... Hawaii ... hmmm ..."

» On the other hand, the NCAA doesn't do anything, that banner stays up, everybody's happy.

» All those names blew me away in reading Cindy Luis' UH volleyball season wrap-up the other day. Maybe it just never hit me before: Men's volleyball has six spots on the floor, 4.5 scholarships on the books and 19 guys on the team.

» I've been asking how I could possibly tape over "June Jones: On the Record." To which I can only say, Have you seen the "Charlie Murphy/Rick James" episode of "Chapelle's Show"?

» Just when I thought Eli might be a Manning I could pull for ...

» When you write about someone there is usually some aspect you don't have time for, don't have room for or simply couldn't fit into the flow of the story, to your eternal regret.

In Les Keiter's case I wish I could have included his time as voice of the Honolulu Quarterback Club. Former "Head Coach" Kimo Sutton said he used to get speakers to commit by reminding them they would be introduced by the General.

"And those honored will be introduced by Les Keiter," Jim Leahey said Monday. "And there will be no greater moment than that."

Being on the receiving end of a genuine Les Keiter introduction is the coolest thing. They should auction off the experience at fund-raisers.

» Of course the quote of the day was from Leahey, who said, "I have known Les Keiter since I was very small."

» It's April 30 and the Rainbows are 24-15 and Nevada is in town to play some baseball. So far, for year 3 of the Mike Trapasso regime, so good.

» I wonder, in the wake of the news of Pat Tillman, if Tiger Woods is still excited about going to his special-forces fantasy camp.
