BYU, Long Beach advance at MPSF playoffs

PROVO, Utah » Top-ranked Brigham Young survived a scare from No. 4 Pepperdine last night, outlasting the Waves 30-27, 27-30, 30-27, 24-30, 15-12 in the first semifinal of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at Smith Fieldhouse.

Fernado Pessoa had 20 kills for the Cougars (26-4), who advance to tomorrow's championship against No. 2 Long Beach State. The 49ers (27-5) eliminated No. 3 UCLA (24-6), 30-25, 30-27, 30-28 in the second semifinal.

Tomorrow's winner earns the MPSF's automatic berth into next week's NCAA Championship at the Stan Sheriff Center. Two other berths will also be decided tomorrow in the finals of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association tournaments.

The at-large entry will be announced Sunday.

At University Park, Pa., top-seeded Penn State advanced to its 19th consecutive EIVA championship tournament final after sweeping unseeded George Mason 30-19, 30-21, 30-17 last night.

The Nittany Lions (22-6) will take on Rutgers-Newark (16-10) tomorrow at Rec Hall for the EIVA title. Rutgers-Newark outlasted Juniata in the first semifinal 27-30, 31-29, 30-21, 27-30, 15-12, a match where the teams combined for 24.5 blocks.

The MIVA semifinals are scheduled for today at Ohio State. The host Buckeyes (21-8) take on defending national champion Lewis (17-13) while Ball State (21-8) faces Loyola of Chicago (20-7).

Scrimmage highlights Spring Extravaganza

A 60-play offense vs. defense scrimmage highlights the University of Hawaii Warrior Football Spring Extravaganza tomorrow at Aloha Stadium.

The scrimmage starts at 7 p.m. Parking gates open at 4:30 p.m. and turnstiles at 5 p.m.

The event is free, but parking is $5.

Activities include a pre-game autograph session with players and coaches, as well as jump castles and slides for children and games and contests for all ages.

There will be performances by the UH band, Rainbow Dancers and UH cheerleaders.

Fans are asked by UH to wear green in support of the Warriors.

Moanalua names varsity basketball coach

Moanalua named Dan Hale its new boys varsity head basketball coach yesterday. Hale takes over for Byron Cheng, who coached the Menehunes the last three seasons.

Hale presently is a media teacher at Moanalua and is a former Punahou basketball player and coach. He graduated from Chaminade in 1985.

UH-Hilo lands softball recruit

Pitcher Britni Rodriguez of Mater Dei High School in California has signed a letter of intent to play at UH-Hilo next season.

Rodriguez currently is 6-2 with an 0.41 ERA at Mater Dei and has struck out 68 batters in 51 2/3 innings while giving up just 23 hits.

BYU-Hawaii to host tennis regionals

Both the BYU-Hawaii men's and women's tennis teams will host NCAA II West Regional tournaments beginning May 6th.

The women will host Cal Poly Pomona in the first round at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. The winner of that game will take on the winner of Hawaii Pacific and Cal State-L.A. for the right to advance to the NCAA II National Championships in Florida from May 12-15.

On the men's side, BYU-Hawaii will host UC-San Diego Thursday in a second-round game as both teams received first-round byes. The Seasiders defeated the Tritons earlier in the year 6-3. The winner of this match also advances to the NCAA II National Championships.

UH-Hilo to host women' regional: The 11th-ranked Vulcans women's tennis team will also be hosting a West Regional championship where they will play Sonoma State in the first-round.

The winner of that match will take on the winner of the Grand Canyon and UC-San Diego match Friday to advance to the NCAA II National Championships.

Race scheduled for May 9

The Mid-Pacific Road Runners club is putting on the Pearl Harbor Bike Path 10 K Run May 9th at 7 a.m.

Registration will begin at 6 a.m. the morning of the race at Lehua Elementary School in Pearl City where the race will begin. Fees for the race are $5 for non-members and $2 for members. For more information, call 295-6777.

Masters swim meet set for June

The Hawaii International Masters Swim Meet is set for June 25 at 9 a.m. at Ala Moana Beach Park.

Any currently registered USMS swimmers or international masters swimmers may participate in the 2K open ocean swim.
