Kailua attack victim
dies from her wounds

The mother of the suspect
is the second person to die
from the stabbing and fire

A Kailua woman whose 20-year-old son allegedly stabbed her and set her on fire died yesterday.

Police said Kerry White had suffered burns over 80 percent of her body after she was allegedly attacked by her son Micah White during a dispute at the family's Kainui Road home on April 5. According to emergency medical personnel, Kerry White had also been treated for a collapsed lung and been stabbed twice in the left side of the chest and once in the front of her neck.

She is the second victim to die from injuries suffered during her son's alleged attack that day and had been transferred to a mainland hospital for surgery at the time of Micah White's preliminary hearing April 15. On that day, Sharon White, the suspect's aunt, died from burns to 55 percent of her body, multiple cuts to the left side of her head and deep cuts to both hands and forearms.

Police said both women were attacked by Micah White, doused with a flammable liquid and then set on fire. The attack also destroyed the Whites' home. Micah White turned himself in to police the next day by using a roadside emergency phone near a lookout along Pali Highway.

Prosecutors said they will likely seek one count of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder against the suspect. Currently, Micah White faces two counts of second-degree attempted murder, one count of first-degree attempted murder and one count of first-degree criminal property damage.

White is being held in lieu of $300,000 bail. Police said he is under suicide watch at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
