Soldier charged
in Iraqi’s death

In what might be one of the first murder cases involving a soldier serving in Iraq, a 25th Infantry Division infantryman has been charged with killing an Iraqi civilian two months ago.

Pfc. Edward L. Richmond Jr., 20, was charged April 5 with the unjustified shooting of an Iraqi male on Feb. 28.

He could face a military court-martial, although the Army in Tikrit, Iraq, could not say how long it would take before a decision is made or where a court-martial would be held if there is one.

A spokesman for the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks also did not know if Richmond, who is assigned to Headquarters company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, would be brought back to Hawaii for the court-martial.

The 25th Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team -- led by Col. Lloyd Miles -- is assigned to the German-based 1st Infantry Division for a year. It left for Iraq in late January.

According to earlier reports, Richmond was on a 27th Infantry team searching for terrorists in the Al Huijah area southwest of Kirkuk when the Iraqi was killed. No other details were released by the Army.
