8 police cars chase pair accused of theft

LIHUE >> A man, 41, and woman suspected of shoplifting from the Home Depot in Lihue led almost the entire Kauai Police Department's on-duty patrolmen on a high-speed chase Wednesday afternoon through Lihue and Nawiliwili.

The Kauai Police Department said eight police cars were involved in the chase, which reached 75 mph on streets, before the suspects were stopped when officers blocked the road.

Normally, 10 patrol cars are on the road throughout the entire island during a shift.

Police said Home Depot employees reported the couple had left the store without paying for several items. They wrote down the license plate number on the car and phoned it to police.

The couple was arrested on suspicion of fourth-degree theft, a petty misdemeanor, for stealing items valued at less than $300.
