Hana and Radford look
to replace departing
athletic directors

After losing athletic directors to other high schools, Hana and Radford are seeking permanent replacements.

Hana hired Richard Young as a temporary replacement for Keith Morioka on Monday, according to principal Frank Wick and Department of Education Maui complex area superintendent Alan Ashitomi.

Morioka is leaving the Dragons to become the Big Island Interscholastic Federation executive secretary starting May 5.

Young is a health and physical education resource teacher in the Maui school district.

He is a former wrestling coach at Aiea and Mililani.

Ashitomi said Young can re-apply for the permanent position, which the DOE hopes to fill by summer or sooner.

Radford's three assistant athletic directors -- Kelly Sur, Herman Leong and Kai Enos -- will take over the duties of Eddie Maruyama if a permanent replacement isn't found before Maruyama leaves to take a job as Iolani co-athletic director July 1.

"The DOE will post the job and go through the normal hiring process," Radford principal Robert Stevens said. "We hope to have somebody before summer so there can be a transition period before Eddie leaves."

The Iolani position was open due to Judy Hiramoto's retirement, effective at the end of the school year.

In addition, Kailua athletic director Mel Imai will be searching for a replacement for head football coach Darren Johnson, who announced his resignation Monday night after being cleared by Surfriders officials of unspecified allegations of wrongdoing.

Mustangs' task cut and dry: The Kalaheo baseball team has a lot riding on its final game of the regular season today at Kaimuki.

Unlike Farrington (4-5-1), which has completed its regular season, the Mustangs (4-5) hold their playoff destiny in their own hands.

The plan is simple for coach Alex Racoma and his boys: beat the Bulldogs and clinch the sixth and final East Division spot in the Oahu Interscholastic Association tournament; lose and they let Farrington take the spot instead.

Hurricanes out: Even though the Kapolei baseball team (4-6) didn't make the playoffs, the Hurricanes went out with a bang.

Pitcher Colin Dumlao threw a no-hitter in the regular-season finale against Nanakuli.

Dumlao faced 15 batters in the mercy-rule-shortened five-inning game, and he struck out 14 of them in the 10-0 victory.

Monden back: Hawaii record-breaking 1-meter diver Aleia Monden of St. Andrew's Priory is back from the West Indoor Junior National Diving Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

Monden placed 14th out of 32 competitors in the 1-meter event and 18th out of 31 in 3-meter diving.

Three on junior nationals: Punahou freshman Spencer McLachlin, Iolani sophomore Kawika Shoji and Kamehameha senior Adam Tuifagu were selected to USA Volleyball's National Youth Team, according to the organization's Web site.

University of Hawaii associate men's volleyball coach Tino Reyes is an assistant for the squad.

Red Raiders fund-raiser: The Kahuku girls basketball team is holding the "Lady Raider Carnival" fund-raiser Friday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the school's campus.

The cost is $10 pre-sale and $15 at the door. It includes unlimited access to all rides and games. Food items will be sold separately.
