Jasmine Trias: Said her chosen tune was "the perfect song" because it moves people

Estefan, described by host Ryan Seacrest as "the undisputed queen of Latin pop," was the evening's guest judge.

Following a week of collaboration with Estefan, Trias took to the stage as the fifth performer, backed by Estefan's longtime group, the Miami Sound Machine.

Trias chose the balmy "Here We Are," from Estefan's first solo album, "Cuts Both Ways," as her number.

"I think it's the perfect song for me because it's a song that moves you," Trias said in a pre-taped interview shown just before her act. "I want the music to sing with me and I want people to feel that."

Draped in a sleeveless black blouse and matching clamdiggers, the Maryknoll senior aimed to impress the judges and the American viewing audience.

"That was a good choice for you," judge Randy Jackson said at the conclusion of her performance. "I mean, it had the potential to be like, an amazing kind of vocal thing for you. It fell a little short for me. I mean, it was like, seven out of 10."

"You did a beautiful job," Estefan said.

"It's amazing 'cause you have this powerhouse voice and this really pretty tone to it," noted judge Paula Abdul. "I've always been a fan of your voice, Jasmine, and today's no exception to the rule."

Following a burst of applause, judge Simon Cowell said, "One person's come out very well tonight, and that's you, Gloria."

Addressing Trias, he said: "At best, that was a pleasant imitation, the sort of thing you would hear if you were recording an album for elevators. I have hit the nail on the head. It was pleasant."

Estefan, interpreting Cowell's remark as a jab at Trias, turned to Cowell and said, "There are going to be a lot of psychiatric bills that you're going to be responsible for in the future."

Cowell then clarified, "It was pleasant, and tonight, pleasant is good."

Results of last night's nationwide call-in ballot will be announced at 7:30 tonight on KHON.
