Hawaii baseball adds 4 recruits for 2005

Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso announced the signing of four more players who will join the Rainbows next year.

The top recruit is Esteban Lopez, a catcher for Yavapai College (Prescott, Ariz.) who currently leads the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference with 25 doubles while hitting .371 with 46 runs batted in.

"Lopez is a high-profile player who has been drafted. He will definitely help us behind the plate," said Trapasso.

Lopez was selected by the New York Mets in the 49th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft.

Trapasso also signed junior college players Dean Turner and Adam Roberts and high school catcher Erik Ammon of North Salem (Ore.) High School.

Turner is a right-hander pitching for Bellevue (Wash.) College. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 35th round last year.

Roberts, a third baseman for Edmonds (Wash.) Community College, was hitting .319 through April 6.

Roberts and Lopez both play in wood-bat leagues.

"Erik Ammon is considered by many to be the top catching prospect in Oregon," said Trapasso.

The signings bring the total of new players for the 2005 season to 19.

Kodama next plays in the WAC championships in Fresno, Calif., starting Monday.
