Fashion party will
support Charity Walk
YOU CAN get a glimpse of a new clothing line coming to the islands and help a good cause on Friday at the W Honolulu.
Matthew "Matty Boy" Hazelgrove and Komo Low are dedicating this week's edition of "Wonderlounge" to the introduction of Mada, a new clothing line started by Vinnie De La Pena.
"He wanted to do a more 'fashion-forward' company," Hazelgrove explained. De La Pena ran Ezekiel before selling that company to start Mada. "It's a men's clothing line ... they're doing a lot of stichwork, a lot of embroidered logos. It's really interesting stuff," he said.
Friday's party will include a fashion show, featuring items from Mada's summer line specially tailored to fit the five female models that Hazelgrove has lined up for the evening.
San Francisco's DJ Mei Lwun will provide an exclusive mix for the show, and DJs Rayne, Drift, Gary-O and Sean G will also be on hand to man the turntables that night.
Doors open at 9 p.m. for the 21-and-over crowd, and a portion of the $15 cover charge will benefit the Charity Walk Oahu, sponsored by the Hawaii Hotel and Lodging Association. E-mail doormanprod@hotmail.com for more info ...
ONE OF MY favorite performances from this year's Merrie Monarch Festival was by Halau I Ka Wekiu, who took first place in the men's Auana division and third place overall among the men in Hilo a few weeks back.
I was pleasantly surprised by the costumes halau members wore -- customized rash guards and boardshorts -- and how they tied surfing moves into their performance.
"People have called us out of the box," says Halau I Ka Wekiu kumu hula Michael Lanakila Casupang. "When it comes to the Auana competition, you don't really have to stay within traditional Hawaiian wear. That's our interpretation."
A Sunday afternoon surf session led to the idea for "Ka Ha'awina He'e Nalu," a collaboration between students who surf and a kumu who doesn't. Want to listen to the song? It can be found on "KUmZ," a new album by Casupang and Carl Veto Baker, in stores now ...
AND CONGRATS to Goldenvoice's Nikki Robinson, who gave birth March 2 to a healthy baby boy.
Just six weeks after bringing Reef Kawika Robinson home from the hospital, mom was back in the office to finish getting ready for this week's Paul Oakenfold concert at Pipeline Cafe.
Did that mean the baby was at home with his dad? Of course not!
"He's already hard at work at the Goldenvoice office," laughed Nikki over the phone last week, as Reef fussed in the background. Talk about choosing a career path early ...
