Rainbow Wahine sail to victory

The University of Hawaii women's sailing team won the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association championship yesterday at Keehi Lagoon.

UH posted a two-day total of 90 points to beat second-place Stanford (122 points) in the event held at the Honolulu Community College Marine Education and Training Center. Both schools qualified for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association women's championship.

UH crews finished first in 13 of 36 races, seven in the A division and six in the B division.

UH's Jennifer Warnock, Blaire Ladd, Cassandra Harris and Shandy Buckley had 42 points with a first-place finish in the A division. Renee DeCurtis, Sarah Reed and B.J. Clausen finished with 48 points in the B division, to place second.

Taylor wins Ah Chew Goo Award

Freshman Janevia Taylor was the recipient of the Ah Chew Goo Achievement Award at the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine basketball team's annual banquet last night at the Ala Moana Hotel.

Taylor also shared most outstanding defensive player honors with freshman Brittany Grice. Junior Jade Abele was named the most outstanding offensive player for leading the team in scoring (14.2 points per game), assists (60) and 3-point goals (38). Junior Milia Macfarlane received the most inspirational award and Trisha Nishimoto was named the top scholar-athlete.

Scott, Rogers win AVP Tempe Open

Kailua resident Sean Scott teamed with Todd Rogers to defeat three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly and Kaneohe's Mike Lambert 15-21, 25-23, 18-16 in the finals of the Association of Volleyball Professionals Tempe Open yesterday.

The tournament win was the first of Scott's career. Scott and Rogers fell behind 3-0 in the third set before scoring the next five points to pull out the win.

"This was special," Scott said. "By beating the greatest beach volleyball player in history, this is something I will never forget. Hopefully, this will help us as we continue to play for a spot in the Olympics. A win like this will really help build our confidence."

Scott and Rogers claimed the $14,500 first price with the victory. The team of Misty May and Kerri Walsh defeated Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs 21-12, 21-19 for the women's title.
