Students get chance for Japanese program
Community college students with little or no prior knowledge of the Japanese language are eligible to participate in a scholarship program that will involve intensive study of the Japanese language and one semester of study abroad in Japan.
Participants in the Freeman Foundation Community College Scholarship Program will be involved in intensive Japanese language study for the fall semester at Kapiolani Community College followed by a semester abroad at Nanzan University in Japan in the spring 2005 semester. The scholarship pays for tuition, room and board at Kapiolani Community College and air fare, tuition, room, board and a stipend for the semester study period in Japan.
To be eligible for the program, applicants must be U.S. citizens, have a minimum GPA of 3.3 and be full-time (12 credits or more) community college students at any of the UH community college campuses. Students cannot have taken any Japanese language courses beyond the level 102 course.
Kapiolani Community College received a two-year, $1.2 million grant from the Freeman Foundation to establish this intensive second-language learning and study-abroad program.
The deadline to apply is Friday.

Honolulu Airport gets $6.2 million in grants
Honolulu Airport will receive more than $6.2 million in federal grants for safety improvements.
A total of $1.2 million will go toward the first phase of construction of the aircraft rescue and firefighting training facility. A total of $1.8 million will go toward the acquisition of three aircraft and firefighting vehicles, and $3,236,437 will go toward installation of airfield guidance signs.

Drug suspects to face charges in Honolulu
Two of four people who were arrested in a drug bust in Kau last week are expected to be transported to Honolulu today to face federal drug charges.
Michael Delos Santos, 25, of Waiohinu, and David Akana, 57, of Pahala, were to arrive in Honolulu today.
The two other suspects, Delos Santos' father, Gary, 56, of Waiohinu, and William Lawson, 53, of Honolulu, were released Saturday pending further investigation.
Police arrested Michael Delos Santos, Lawson and Akana Thursday for a variety of drug offenses after a drug raid at a residence in Waiohinu.
Gary Delos Santos was arrested the following day at Naalehu Elementary & Intermediate School where he works as a custodian, according to a source.
Police seized 468.2 grams of crystal methamphetamine, or "ice," a small amount of marijuana, an unknown powder substance, 15 unknown pills, drug paraphernalia, $566 in cash and a vehicle.
Two federal search warrants -- one in Kealakekua in Kona and the other in Kau -- were served yesterday. Police said the warrants are related to last week's drug raid.

Moiliili man accused of sex assaults of girl
Police are investigating a 30-year-old Moiliili man who allegedly sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl.
The victim's mother reported to police Saturday that her daughter told her that a neighbor sexually assaulted her at his Moiliili home on several occasions.
The 11-year-old girl was taken to Kapiolani Medical Center to be examined. No arrests have been made, police said.
Man, 36, is charged with attempted murder
A 36-year-old man was charged yesterday after he allegedly stabbed another man last week.
Jin Woo Chong, 36, was charged with second-degree attempted murder. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Police said Chong was involved in a physical altercation with another man, 41, at Keeaumoku and Young streets about 3:30 p.m. Friday when Chong stabbed him in the stomach.
The victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.
Coast Guard rescues 4 off Pearl Harbor
Four people were rescued off Pearl Harbor yesterday after two of their personal watercraft malfunctioned.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Megan Collins said a 25-foot rescue boat was sent two miles off Pearl Harbor about 2:10 p.m. after one of the four people called for help on a cellular phone. They were taken to Keehi Lagoon.
There were no injuries, said Collins.
