Moanalua clinches
postseason berth
In the past, it was hard for folks to believe coach Corey Ishigo when he called his Kailua baseball team lazy.
That's because when he said it, the Surfriders were en route to a fourth consecutive Oahu Interscholastic Association championship last season.
Now, however, it's a little easier to understand Ishigo's frustration.
The Surfriders (6-3) committed five errors yesterday in a 12-8 loss at home to Moanalua. It was the team's second straight loss and third in the last four games.
"If anyone comes and watches us practice, they would see that there's a problem," Ishigo said. "The way we played today is how we practice and it's the way we've practiced the whole season. We've got some guys who play hard and others who don't. This is a team sport and we don't need a bunch of individuals.
"Last year, they got away with it. This year, we're losing to ourselves."
Ngriblekuu claims 3 individual titles
The Kalaheo girls and Kahuku boys won titles at yesterday's OIA East Division track and field championships at Kaiser.
In the West Division championships at Mililani, the Mililani girls and Pearl City boys captured titles.
Kalaheo's Jessika Ngriblekuu took home three individual titles in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter East races, while fellow Mustang Tonya McBride won the high jump, pole vault and triple-jump.
In the West, Pearl City's Nathaniel Nasca, who won the 100- and 200-meter races as well as the 110 hurdles, was the only individual to win three events. Waialua's Lorin Milotta was a double winner in the 100 and 300 hurdles.

Despite the loss, Kailua has already clinched a spot in the playoffs, but it won't be getting a first-round bye.
With the victory, Moanalua (5-3-1) clinched a spot in the postseason. The Menehunes were hungry from the start, scoring six unearned runs in the top of the first. Andrew Blomberg's RBI double was one of the key blows in the inning.
Blomberg earned the pitching win, despite giving up 10 hits in his 5 1/3 innings and allowing the Surfriders to mount a comeback. Chance Daskauskas finished up to end Kailua's bid to overcome the big deficit.
"We swung the bats and scored some runs," Moanalua coach Scott Yamada said. "A.B. (Blomberg) struggled all day, but he battled and gave us five innings and Chance did a good job to finish up."
Moanalua's lead grew to 9-0 in the second on Daskauskas' RBI triple and Blomberg's two-run homer over the right-field fence.
Three more runs in the fourth -- without any hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error -- put the Menehunes up 12-1.
But Kailua's bats didn't stay flat. Mike Kealoha drove in the team's first two runs with a double in the second and a single in the fourth.
Then, Tyler Harrison's RBI single and sacrifice flies by Kekoa Su'a in the fourth and Aaron Kent in the fifth allowed the Surfriders to cut it to 12-5.
Catcher Sean Medeiros, who finished 3-for-3, smashed an RBI double to left in a three-run sixth to trim the deficit to four runs.
"We're taking teams too lightly and are being lazy," Medeiros said. "We came out slow and didn't work hard enough. We can't afford to take any teams lightly."
