Wolfpack sweep Wahine

Candice Rainwater's RBI single scored Jamie Waldron in the bottom of the 14th inning to give the Wolfpack a 4-3 win over the Hawaii softball team in Game 1 of their doubleheader yesterday in Reno, Nev.

In the second game, Tiffany Hoeft pitched a two-hit shutout to complete the sweep with a 3-0 win. Only Tyleen Tausaga and Justin Kahaku managed to get a hit for the Wahine.

Hawaii is now 24-29 overall and 6-10 in the Western Athletic Conference.

BYUH earns split: Lisa Hansen tossed a six-hit shutout and Brooke Hilton blasted a two-run homer as Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Montana State-Billings 4-0 to earn a split of yesterday's doubleheader in Billings, Mont.

Caitlin Luehr smacked a pinch-hit two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning of Game 1 to give the Mustangs a 2-0 victory. Seasiders pitcher Echo Hatch scattered just six hits over 9 1/3 innings before giving up the homer to Luehr.

Punahou graduates dominate Tempe Open

Punahou alumnus Mike Lambert, teaming with three-time Olympian Karch Kiraly, secured a spot in today's semifinal rounds with a 21-13, 20-22, 23-21 victory over Dain Blanton and Jeff Nygard at the AVP Nissan Series Tempe Open.

Lambert and Kiraly will next face Eric Fonoimoana and another Buffanblu graduate, Kevin Wong. Wong and Fonoimoana fell to the contenders bracket after losing to yet another Punahou graduate, Stein Metzger, and partner Dax Holdren, 13-21, 21-19, 15-12.

On the ladies' side, former UH volleyball player Heidi Illustre and teammate Tanya Fuamatu dropped both of their matches in the tournament, forfeiting their first game in the main draw and losing to Alicia Polzin and Ali Wood 22-20, 21-18 in the first round of the contenders bracket.

Wahine sailing team takes lead

The Hawaii women's sailing team managed to fight off Stanford for an eight-point lead heading into the second day of the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association women's championships yesterday at Keehi Lagoon. USC is in third followed by UC-Irvine and UC-Santa Barbara.

The Wahine totaled three first-place finishes in the A division and four more in the B division.

The first- and second-place teams in this regatta will qualify for the ICSA Women's Championship. Today's races will begin at 10 a.m.

2 school records fall at Drake Relays

Dana Buchanan broke the school record in the 1,500-meter run with an NCAA regional-qualifying mark of 4:28.23 yesterday in the final day of competition for a split-Wahine squad at the Drake Relays.

UH competed in just three events at the relays, but one of them was the 4x800 relay that saw the team of Kelly Young, Buchanan, Ashley Monfort and Robin McRobbie finish with a time of 9:13.14 and break the school record by three seconds.

Smoody and Bell finish second: Senior Olivia Smoody was one of two second-place finishers for the Wahine, with a high-jump leap of 1.70 meters, her best of the spring.

The other top finish came from Jenny Bell, who finished a 3,000-meter run with a time of 10.25.66.

UH's Kodama captures golf title

Hawaii senior Matt Kodama won a playoff with a birdie in sudden death to win the second individual title of his career at the Ping Cougar Classic at Provo, Utah, yesterday.

Kodama, who entered the final round in second place a stroke behind UTEP's Chris Baryla, shot a 69 to tie Colorado State's Matthew Laird and Brigham Young's Ronn Harvey.

Kodama carried the par-4 10th hole -- the first of the playoff -- in three shots.

His effort lifted the Warriors to eighth place, with Kellen Floyd Asao shooting a 217 and Cody Wolfenbarger carding a 221.

Colorado State won the team title with an 845, 12 strokes better than second-place Texas-El Paso.

Football tickets for faculty, students to go on sale

2004 UH football season tickets for UH faculty, students and staff will go on sale Saturday, May 1 at the Stan Sheriff Center Box Office.

A lottery system will be used for UH faculty and staff. They may pick up a lottery ticket number at the Sheriff Center (Gate B) from 8:30 to 9 a.m. on May 1. Anyone arriving after 9 a.m. will be required to wait until all lottery ticket numbers have been serviced.

Students will not be included in the lottery system but will be able to purchase tickets also at 9 a.m. The line for tickets will start no earlier that 7 a.m.
