All were invited to help make and eat the world's longest Spam musubi yesterday at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center to kick off the second annual Waikiki Spam Jam. Micah Pebley, 9 months old, was fed some rice from a musubi by his mother, Denise Pebley. She said Micah loved the rice. The Spam musubi used more than 275 pounds of rice, 1,650 slices of Spam and 600 feet of nori. It was measured at 313 feet, breaking the record of 300 feet set at the Kauai County Fair. Spam Jam events continue today with a street festival along Kalakaua Avenue from 4 to 10 p.m.


BANK CRASH INJURES 1

A 72-year-old Kapahulu man drove through the glass double-doors at the rear entrance to the University branch of First Hawaiian Bank at about noon yesterday, causing minor injuries to a customer inside. Richard Silvas, shown here sitting in front of the shattered glass, said he was parking his 1991 Delta Eighty-Eight Oldsmobile when the car suddenly lunged forward. Silvas said he stepped on the brakes but did not realize what was happening when the glass shattered around his car. Police said the customer was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in fair condition.

The Navy frigate USS Reuben James returned to Pearl Harbor yesterday after a 2 1/2-month deployment to Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador and Mexico centered mainly on anti-drug activities. Michael Treiber received a long-awaited hug and kiss from his daughters, Shalyn, 4, left, and Savannah, 2, upon his return.
