Girl Scouts going high-tech in retail

The Girl Scout Council of Hawaii is using new point-of-sale technology to track its retail operation.

The point-of-sale system will monitor the council's $200,000 in annual sales of Girl Scout products such as uniforms, pins and patches at all five shops around the state.

The cost of the system was not disclosed, but vendor CompuTant waived the hardware and software installation cost of $10,000 to help the council stay within its budget.

"Through the use of technology we will be able to operate more effectively and efficiently, provide better service to our membership and maximize the use of our limited resources," said Curtis Leong, chief financial officer for the council. The next step is to see how the system can help manage the inventory of 500,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies sold in Hawaii each year.
