HPU sweeps defending national champs

The Hawaii Pacific women's softball team swept defending national champion UC-Davis 1-0 and 5-3 yesterday at the Lady Sea Warrior softball field.

Holly Garcia's RBI double scored Rachel Lacar for the first game's only run as Jessica Parra picked up the win, scattering five hits.

The Sea Warriors trailed 3-0 in game two but rallied with a run in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning for the final margin. Tiari Keliinoi picked up the big hit of the fifth inning with a two-run double.

HPU improved to 20-17 and will close out the four-game series with UC-Davis tomorrow at noon.

Toros sweep Vulcans: The UH-Hilo Vulcans fell victim to timely hitting and clutch pitching as Cal State Dominguez Hills swept a doubleheader 5-2 and 1-0 yesterday at the UHH softball field.

In game one, the Vulcans led 2-1 in the top of the seventh but gave up four runs, highlighted by a Natalie Sharp two-run single.

Valerie Long dominated game two, holding the Vulcans to six hits while striking out five. Miki Asamura nearly matched Long for the Vulcans, giving up just one run while striking out two.

The series continues again today with another doubleheader at noon.

Wahine split doubleheader: April Crowell and Tyleen Tausaga belted home runs in support of pitcher Melissa Coogan as the Wahine won game one of a doubleheader with Nevada 9-3 yesterday at Reno, Nevada.

Tracie Uchima added four hits for the Wahine in game one and two more in game two, but the outcome didn't remain the same as Nevada's Candice Rainwater gave up just one run in seven innings as the Wolfpack forced the split with a 3-1 win.

Noelle Izumi scored the Wahine's lone run in game two on an RBI single by Paula Blanning, who pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Shannon Tabion.

The Wahine sit at 24-27 and 6-8 in the WAC.

Chrisman named to NABC first team

BYU-Hawaii junior forward Jake Chrisman was named to the NABC All-West Region first team yesterday.

Chrisman, who was eighth nationally averaging 23.3 points a game, was the only player from the Pacific West Conference named to either the first or second team.

Chrisman was just the fourth player in school history to average more than 20 points a game last season. He was named PacWest player of the week five times last season and has also been named a Division II Bulletin Honorable Mention All-American and Daktronics Third Team All-American.
