Roosevelt upsets previously
unbeaten Kahuku

Roosevelt is a Division II basketball team, but it played like a Division I powerhouse last night in a 57-48 upset of previously undefeated Kahuku.

The Rough Riders (7-2) moved within a game of the Red Raiders (8-1) in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division.

Chelsie Kadota hit a 3-pointer and Tati Beasley scored seven of her 14 points as Roosevelt outscored Kahuku 16-2 in the pivotal third quarter.

"I'd been telling everyone, it's a one-shot deal, so they laid it all on the line and came out with the 'W,' " said Rough Riders coach Bobby Keanini, who also credited a swarming defense (led by Shannon Miyashiro) on Red Raiders post Latoya Wily as a big factor in the third quarter.

Nicole Yoshimoto had a game-high 22 for Roosevelt, while Beasley pulled in 13 rebounds and added seven steals, six assists and three blocks.

"Kahuku wasn't at its best and we probably played our best," Keanini said.

Wily led the Red Raiders with 16 points.

Even though it's a D-II team, Roosevelt can qualify for the D-I playoffs if it finishes in the top four of the division. The Rough Riders finish against two strong foes -- Farrington and Kaiser.
