Club Pauahi
is underground
music paradise

DON'T SLEEP on Club Pauahi downtown -- it's turning into one of the better spots to hear some of the best underground music Hawaii has to offer.

Last week, Unity Crayons and Deadmonkey Music teamed up for "Collision," a mix of punk and hip-hop that featured Lowest Common Denominator, SomatoForm, Umgawd, The 86 List, Upstanding Youth, the Ex-SuperHeros, Tinkle Potty and DJ Monkey.

This weekend it's a "Punk Rock Explosion" at the club, with 16 bands performing over two nights. Starting at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Upstanding Youth returns to perform with Dork, Chain Shot, No Hope No Pride, Final Apogee, El Enemigo, Pet Jhonny and Black Square. The 86 List and The Ex-Superheros will be on stage Saturday; The Hit, the Daykillers, P*** Poor Excuse, Extra Stout, DeBauch and The Enemy Within are also scheduled to play.

Cover for the shows is $5 each night, or you can pay $8 and attend both. Call 521-7252 ...

LOOKING FOR something a little more refined? Try "Ilikai's Art By the Glass" tomorrow night from 6 to 8 p.m. at Canoes Restaurant in the hotel.

Local watercolor artist Carli Oliver will be on hand to give an art demonstration as guests sample wines and grind on complimentary pupus; Hawaiian Gypsy will provide the night's soundtrack of flamenco guitar music.

Tickets for the wine tasting are $15 each, although you could probably get around the charge if you stick to drinking soda while you're there. Call 949-3811, Ext. 6861 for more details ...

TOMORROW AT the Hard Rock Cafe, Matty Liu and Heavystate Industries have teamed up for another concert. Quadraphonix will play starting at 9 p.m., and there will be a ton of free stuff given away by Sessions, Hoven, Ezekiel and Water Goddess.

Party people 18-and-over are welcome at the Hard Rock; call 955-7383 ...

LAST WEEK it was Kavet the Catalyst's time to shine, as "Trip the Lights" marked one year of parties at Studio 1.

This week it's "Nitelite" that celebrates one year at its home in Meritage at Restaurant Row.

House heads should be excited about this one -- San Francisco-based DJ/producer Kaskade will pay a visit on Saturday to promote his new album, "In the Moment." Resident DJs Eugene, Kawika and Reid will also be on the decks for this 21-and-over party.

Doors open at 10 p.m. for the one-year anniversary of "Nitelite," call 529-8686 ...

ARE YOU a good cook? The Mai Tai Bar at Ala Moana wants to hear from you.

Entries will be accepted until Monday for the bar's "Kaukau Challenge," where culinary students, working cooks and serious amateur chefs all have a chance at over $10,000 in cash and prizes. Winning recipes will also be featured on the Mai Tai Bar's regular menu. Check out www.kaukauchallenge.com for the rules and to download an entry form ...
