McLachlin hangs on for win
Parker McLachlin recovered from a shaky start to shoot a 5-under-par 66 yesterday and win the NGAHooters Pro Golf Tour's Golden Corner Charity Classic.
The Punahou graduate double-bogeyed the first hole of yesterday's final round at Cross Creek Plantation in Seneca, SC. But he birdied six of the next eight holes and finished the four-day tournament at 13-under-par 271, two shots ahead of runner-up Michael Letzig.
"I wasn't worried when I doubled the first," McLachlin said. "I knew there were holes still left where you could shoot some good numbers. I hadn't made any this week and I was due."
McLachlin entered the day tied for second after shooting a 69 on Saturday and passed third-round leader Tee McCabe to claim the $24,000 first-place check.
McLachlin was playing in only his second Hooters Tour event. He finished tied for 16th in his first attempt.

Tulsa pitcher Maren Genow earned a complete-game win in the opener and a save in the second to lead the Golden Hurricane to a doubleheader sweep of the Hawaii softball team yesterday in Oklahoma.
Tulsa (35-15, 8-3 Western Athletic Conference) won the opener 2-1, scoring on a run-scoring double by Kelly Miller and a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Sliepen in the fourth inning. UH's Melissa Coogan (8-13) took the loss despite surrendering just four hits. Genow (17-3) struck out six and walked none for Tulsa.
Genow then tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to close out a 6-2 Tulsa win in the second game. Miller and Katie Torres homered for the Hurricane. UH dropped to 23-24 and 5-5 in the WAC.
UH water polo team splits matches
The Hawaii water polo team held off a Pacific rally to defeat the Tigers 11-5 yesterday in the Long Beach State Tournament. The Rainbow Wahine then lost to UC San Diego 9-7 in their final game of the two-day event.
UH sophomore Shannon Carroll scored three goals against Pacific and Leanna Hahn recorded 12 saves for the Rainbows, who finished 2-2 in the tournament. Junior Beth Novick's three-goal effort and Carroll's two weren't enough to overcome a UCSD comeback in the second half.
UH enters the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament at 12-13. The tournament opens April 30 at Long Beach.
UH's Monroe claims long-jump title
Hawaii junior Tasha Monroe captured first place in the women's open long jump at the Mt. San Antonio Community College Relays held yesterday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Monroe posted a leap of 5.97 meters to edge two women from the University of Wisconsin -- Melissa Talbot (5.89m) and Christina Taylor (5.86m).
Novelle Murray tossed a personal best in the discus in the meet. Her throw of 49.5 meters is the third-best in the Western Athletic Conference this season.
Kelsey Smith placed fourth overall in the javelin with a throw of 40.75 meters. Olivia Smoody equaled her season best in the high jump at 1.63 meters.
