Mid-Pacific girls get
historic hoops victory

Staring history right in the face, Mid-Pacific's Jasmine Vieira calmly penetrated the lane and hit a runner at the buzzer to give the Owls their first win over Kamehameha in school history yesterday, 35-34 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play.

"It looked good from the beginning," Owls head coach Darin Lee said. "She practices that kind of shot, so I knew we had as good a chance as any."

The Owls used an 11-0 run late in the first quarter to build an 18-7 lead, and took a 26-19 advantage into halftime. But the Warriors came out in a zone in the second half and forced the Owls into turnovers and bad shots, limiting them to one third-quarter point.

"We beat ourselves the last game against them and we started to make some poor choices again this game, but this time, we were able to maintain our poise," Lee said.

The Warriors tied the game at 27 heading into the fourth quarter, where the lead changed hands six times. The Warriors had a one-point lead with eight seconds left, but the Owls used a full-court press to force a turnover to help set up Vieira's game-winning shot.

"This team worked hard over the past two weeks after we weren't playing too well," Lee said. "They expected to win and kept fighting back and it paid off."
