Bail confirmed for son in stabbings and fire

District Judge Faye Koyanagi confirmed bail at $300,000 for a 20-year-old Kailua man accused of stabbing his mother and aunt and dousing them with gasoline and setting them afire April 5.

At Micah White's first appearance in court since his arrest a week ago, the Office of the Public Defender waived his right to have the charges against him read and requested a preliminary hearing. Koyanagi set the hearing for tomorrow.

White, dressed in light-blue painter overalls, made no statements on his behalf. He was charged Thursday with first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder and one count of first-degree criminal property damage.

After the hearing, deputy public defender Susan Arnett called the incident "a tragedy" but declined further comment.

Guilty plea is expected in Maui airport episode

A Maui man accused of driving his roommate's sport utility vehicle into Kahului Airport and setting it on fire is expected to plead guilty to a federal charge Thursday in U.S. District Court.

Paul Blatchley, 52, was arrested Feb. 29 and has been in custody at the federal detention center since March 1 when federal prosecutors charged him with committing violence at an international airport.

Blatchley will enter a plea before a magistrate and waive his right to be indicted on the charge, Assistant U.S. Attorney Wes Porter said yesterday.

Blatchley faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison.
