Tuna to the Foodbank

The Hawaii Foodbank is building a "Sea of Tuna" at Restaurant Row through April 24.

Help pump up the protein stores at the Hawaii Foodbank by donating cans of tuna -- or make a cash donation -- in return for which your name will be placed on a paper fish and added to the tuna stockpile.

Donations may be dropped off at the Waterfront Plaza security office.

The collection is on display in the center of Restaurant Row, near the Row Bar.

All proceeds will be presented to the Foodbank during the 2004 Food Drive on the 24th beginning 8 a.m. Call 532-4750.

Shintani to give talk

Dr. Terry Shintani will give a lecture Saturday as part of the daylong Hepatitis B & C Educational Awareness & Testing Health Fair/Conference at Harris United Methodist Church.

The free event runs 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes information on the status of hepatitis infection and treatment in Hawaii.

Shintani's talk, "Live Longer & Be Healthier on a Good Carbohydrate Diet," is set for 10:15 a.m. as one of several workshops.

Shintani is director of Preventative and Integrative Medicine at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and author of "The Hawaii Diet," which promotes weight loss through a diet that favors complex carbohydrates over animal proteins.

Other speakers include liver specialist Dr. Naoky Chih-Su Tsai, infectious-disease specialist Dr. Alan Tice, liver transplant recipient Mark Boedner and various people who have been cured of hepatitis.

Easter made easy

The Kahala Mandarin Oriental is serving up Easter dinner to go -- a complete ham meal for four to six, depending on how hungry your guests are.

The menu includes ham roasted with a poha berry and five-spice glaze, poha gravy, baked yams, crab-potato salad, steamed vegetables, rice pilaf with roasted pine nuts, artichokes and mushroom salad, hot cross buns and apple cobbler.

Cost is $110. Reservations due by noon Friday, with pickup on Easter Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Drive-through pickup available at the resort's loading bay.) Call 739-8742.

Bunny visits market

The Easter Bunny visits the Saturday Farmers' Market at Kapiolani Community College this weekend, handing out -- appropriately enough -- fresh island Easter eggs (hard-boiled and dyed).

Also, the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki is in charge of breakfast, with chef Göran Streng cooking up malassadas as well as Pork Loin Benedict on Corn Bread, Hollandaise Sauce and Home Fried Potatoes, featuring pork from Shimokawa Farms and eggs from Mikiula Poultry.

Classical guitarist Michael Leong will perform.

The Saturday Farmers' Market is open 8 a.m. to noon in the KCC parking lot. It is sponsored by the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation and the Culinary Institute of the Pacific at KCC. Call 848-2074.

Classes offered at KCC

Kapiolani Community College is offering these Saturday morning classes, both on April 24. Classes run 8 a.m. to noon. Registration runs three weeks in advance. Call 734-9211.

Vegetarian Cooking: Caterer Alyssa Moreau teaches how to make local-style vegetarian dishes. Cost is $43.
