DOT asks isle drivers to
watch for road crews
State Department of Transportation officials are asking motorists to remain cautious when driving near construction crews, who will be working on a number of road projects this month beginning today.
In February a contract worker was killed while taking up cones in the H-1 freeway's Zipper Lane.
"Please remember that these crews are trying to make the roads better and safer for you," Transportation Director Rodney Haraga said. "We are asking drivers to please drive safely and courteously through our construction work zones along our state and city roadways."
Road work projects scheduled for this month include:
» One lane of Likelike Highway will be closed today to Friday in the Honolulu-bound direction between the Wilson Tunnel and the Burmeister Overpass from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. One lane in both directions will also be closed between Valley View Drive and the Burmeister Overpass from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Honolulu-bound direction and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Kaneohe-bound direction. From today through Thursday, Likelike Highway will be closed from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. for tunnel cleaning and repairs.
» One lane of Kamehameha Highway in both directions will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Thursday between Waiahole Valley Road and Kaaawa Place. Crews will be making drainage improvements and working on the highway's guardrail and pedestrian bridge.
» A Haleiwa-bound lane of Farrington Highway, fronting Waialua High and Intermediate School, will be closed between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. today through Thursday for sidewalk and pavement work.
» One lane on the H-1 Palailai Interchange might be closed today through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for median strip work.
» One to two lanes of Nimitz Highway between Kekaulike and Sumner streets will be closed today through Thursday for waterline and railing reconstruction work. The lanes will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
» Exit 1C on H-3 will be closed from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow for electric message sign repair.
» One or the other of the H-1 Makakilo Interchange onramps might be closed for the next several weekends for repavement work.
Meanwhile, several night construction projects are scheduled for this summer, including the widening of the H-1 freeway near Waimalu and the widening of Fort Weaver Road in Ewa.
Transportation officials say motorists who come across construction crews should expect delays, watch for signs and follow the speed limit. For more information on the projects, go to the DOT Web site at www.state.hi.us/dot.
