Kealoha keeps rolling
as Kailua tops Roosevelt

For Kailua's Mike Kealoha, the magic number lately has been three.

Kealoha had his second consecutive game with three hits yesterday, highlighted by a three-run homer to right field that set the tone, as the Surfriders improved to 3-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association East play with a 12-2 win over Roosevelt (1-3). The game ended in the bottom of the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

Kalaheo's Lingo tosses no-hitter

Kalani Lingo isn't the most overpowering pitcher, but he's developing into one of the state's best.

Yesterday the Kalaheo senior right-hander threw a no-hitter as the Mustangs beat visiting Kahuku 7-0.

Lingo struck out seven Red Raiders and walked just two.

"He has really good control, hitting spots with his fastball," Kalaheo coach Alex Racoma said. "He doesn't throw really hard, but his control keeps everybody off-balance. He was out injured halfway through last season, and he's getting better and better as this season progresses."

The closest Kahuku came to getting a hit was on the last play of the seven-inning game, Racoma said.

"Their last batter hit a shot to center, but our center fielder (Orrys Williams) made a nice running catch to his right."

Lingo's gem was the second no-hitter in the Oahu Interscholastic Association in four days. Aiea's Blake Lamug pitched a five-inning no-hitter in a 14-0 victory over Waipahu on Wednesday.

Kealoha went 3-for-3 with a walk and four RBIs, giving him six hits in his last seven at-bats, including a 3-for-4 effort against Kalaheo last weekend. His three-run homer yesterday was also his second round-tripper of the season. He also had a solo homer in a 4-3 win over Castle on opening day.

"The past couple of games, I've been getting hits, so I was comfortable up there today," Kealoha said. "I thought I'd be able to get a couple of hits. Our defense is tough this year. We have a starter back at almost every position. We're working together as a team more now, and our hitting is starting to come along."

The Surfriders pounded out 17 hits yesterday and benefited from Roosevelt's five errors.

"We thought our defense would be our strength coming into this year, and we played solid defense today," said Kailua coach Corey Ishigo, whose team has won four straight OIA titles. "I don't think we had any errors except for a passed ball or a wild pitch."

Offensively, in addition to Kealoha, Kekoa Sua went 4-for-4 with an RBI, while Kevin Matsumoto and Keahi Goo, the Surfriders' seventh and ninth hitters had two hits apiece. That offensive output was more than enough support for starter Bronson Kamaka, who went the distance to pick up the win. He gave up three hits, striking out two, and issuing two walks.

"Except for walking the lead-off hitter a couple of times, Bronson pitched well," Ishigo said. "They're starting to listen and understand what we're talking about now. We're not where we need to be yet, but slowly, we're coming around."

Roosevelt starter Justin Goo worked 3 2/3 innings before giving way to David Aquino and Sean Kikuchi. Goo exited with the score 6-1, mainly the result of Kealoha's three-run homer in the second. Singles by Matsumoto and Goo, sandwiched around a Roosevelt error, had put runners on second and third prior to Kealoha's blast.

Kailua took a 1-0 lead in the first when Sua tripled to score Kealoha, who had led off the inning with a walk.

Kevin Fujii drove in both Roosevelt runs on groundouts.

Kailua was in command throughout but the contest ended in controversy. A near-catch by Roosevelt's Joshua Danz in right (on a single by Sua) scored Kealoha and Matthew Kinoshita with Kailua's final two runs, but it was unclear to onlookers for a moment as to whether the play had been ruled a hit or a catch, the latter of which would have meant a double play for the Rough Riders as well as the continuation of the game.

"Kailua is a good hitting team, and they proved that today," Roosevelt coach Kerry Higa said. "We had a lot of unearned runs, and when you give them opportunities, they make you pay. That was the key -- our errors and good hitting by them. We have good kids who can make plays. We just have to be more consistent from the first inning to the last."
