100th anniversary of
Makiki church to showcase
its founding pastor
Makiki Christian Church will commemorate its 100th anniversary by hosting an exhibition that features founding pastor Takie Okumura, of Japan, and his ministry in Hawaii.
This special exhibit, originally displayed in Kochi, Japan, will be shown at two locations in Honolulu. Admission is free.
First, at Makiki Christian Church, 829 Pensacola St.:
» Sundays, April 11 and 25, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.The exhibition will then move to the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii at 2454 S. Beretania St. It will be on display from May 1 through 29, Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ($1 donation).» Sunday, April 18, 3 to 5 p.m.
» Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
» Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
There is also a videotape made especially for the 100th anniversary. It is available for viewing by calling Diane Fedor at the church office at 594-6446.
Makiki Christian Church was founded on April 8, 1904, by the Rev. Takie Okumura, his assistant Kametaro Maeda and 24 believers working under the auspices of the Hawaiian Evangelical Association (forerunner of the Hawaii Conference, United Church of Christ). The building of the church was the culmination of evangelistic efforts in the Makiki, Manoa, Kaimuki and Waikiki districts of Honolulu since 1902.
The first new church building was constructed on a 10,000-square-foot lot at Kinau and Pensacola streets in 1905 and 1906. In 1932, on a larger site six blocks makai, the existing sanctuary was built, modeled on an ancient Japanese castle.
The "Tower" on the building was designed to reflect the words of the psalmist, "The Lord is a strong tower against my enemy" (Psalm 61:3), and also as a symbol of the early Japanese Christians' trust in God's protection and care.
