STAR-BULLETIN / 2002
Kayla De Reiter picked up Easter eggs at the Harris United Methodist Church's egg hunt two years ago. The church at 20 S. Vineyard Blvd. will hold this year's event on April 11 at 9 a.m.

Welcoming of new Catholics
among special Easter events

At Easter vigils being held today at parishes throughout the state, 235 people who intend to become Catholics will be baptized, confirmed and receive their first Holy Communion.

The largest single parish group comes from the Korean Catholic Community, with 37 to be baptized. Last year, the 800-member Korean parish in Manoa had 47. The community's numbers have grown due to a strong lay evangelization, according to Patrick Downes, editor of the Hawaii Catholic Herald.

The number of new Catholics this year is 17 more than last year's 218. Except for the year 2000, over the past five years, the annual number of newly baptized Catholics in Hawaii has exceeded 200, he said.
