Concert to help girl with cancer

A benefit concert will be held tonight at the Hard Rock Cafe for 14-year-old Leilani Emosi, a Lanakila Baptist School ninth-grader whose cancer recently returned after five years in remission.

Leilani's parents, Esi and Valeri, have been laid off because of the recent concrete worker strikes. The concert, open to those 18 and over, will start at 9 p.m. and feature Nekken, Mixed Nuts, Pimbot, B.E.T. and Amplified. Cost is $10 at the door.

HONOLULU

Fisherman drowns after falling off boat

A 45-year-old fisherman on the Japanese longliner Kinei Maru No. 83 fell overboard and apparently drowned, police said.

Police said the incident happened about 7:55 a.m. March 20. Police said they do not suspect foul play.

The Honolulu medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.

Big Isle fire damages old Nishimoto Store

Fire heavily damaged the old Nishimoto Store in Laupahoehoe on the Big Island on Wednesday night.

Fire crews were called to 32-964 Mamalahoa Highway about 8:22 p.m. and found the abandoned, three-story wooden structure engulfed in flames.

It took 13 firefighters nearly an hour to bring the fire under control. It was extinguished at about 11:12 p.m.

No one was injured. The damage and cause had not been determined.

Elusive Kapaa man turns self in to police

LIHUE >> A Kapaa man who escaped Kauai police in two high-speed chases in two weeks surrendered Wednesday evening.

Leslie Vidinha surrendered to police and was being held without bail yesterday. Police said he was wanted on a bench warrant, but did not specify what the previous charges were.

Vidinha led Kauai police on a chase last week that ended when officers decided there was too much danger to other vehicles. On Tuesday they chased him through much of the South Shore. His vehicle become stuck in mud on a dirt road east of Poipu, and he escaped on foot.

Illinois couple drowns but their son survives

LIHUE >> An Illinois couple watching large surf crash on Lumahai Point on Kauai's North Shore were sucked out to sea yesterday morning by a wave and both apparently drowned, the Kauai Fire Department said.

The couple's 11-year-old son was knocked down by the same wave but not carried out. Bystanders pulled him to safety.

County officials did not identify the victims. Both were recovered and pronounced dead at the scene. The boy has been turned over to state Child Protective Services.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the causes of the deaths.

Pair of boys allegedly mug male victim for $5

Police arrested two Kalihi boys, ages 14 and 15, who allegedly beat and robbed a Waipahu man of $5 at a bus stop early yesterday morning.

The teens approached the 34-year-old victim at 3:30 a.m. at a bus stop fronting Waipahu High School, at 94-1211 Farrington Highway, and demanded money, police said.

The boys then kicked and punched the victim, and then took $5 from him, police said.

Police found the two suspects nearby and arrested them under suspicion of second-degree robbery.
