Iolani's Alana Wall was fouled by Maryknoll's Whitney Wong in the fourth quarter of last night's ILH basketball game.

Wall gives Iolani edge

Alana Wall's numbers aren't exactly eye-popping, but the Iolani sophomore did all the little things to help the Raiders overcome a feisty Maryknoll basketball team yesterday at Saint Louis' McCabe Gym.

Wall had five steals and scored nine points, including two free throws with 15.2 seconds left in the game to seal a 52-46 victory over the Spartans.

"There was a lot of pressure at the end, but I tried not to think about it," Wall said of her two free throws. "I did OK tonight, but I missed a couple of shots. As a team I think we could have played better, but I'm glad we came out with a win."

Iolani used balanced scoring to squeak out the victory. Senior Ginger Gravelle (16 points) and sophomore Hennasea-Sue Tokumura (14 points) led Iolani with double-digit scoring performances.

"Everybody knows about Hennasea and Ginger from last year," said Iolani coach Glenn Takara. "Alana is like our X-factor. Nobody knows what she can do.

"Our last five games, she's been playing real well. We always expected that of her and now it's starting to come out. She's getting a lot more confident and showing it on the court."

Wall displayed the confident and calm side of her game as she stepped to the line and sank the two free throws that put the game out of reach for Maryknoll.

The game see-sawed back and forth in the fourth quarter, with Maryknoll closing within two (47-45) with an 8-2 run. The final 1:09 took nearly 10 minutes to play with the frequent fouls being called. All of Iolani's points in the final period came from the charity stripe.

The bulk of Maryknoll's 11 fourth-quarter points came from the line too, but the Spartans missed three of their final four to thwart their own comeback.

Junior Cheryl Lee led Maryknoll with 15 points, with 10 coming after intermission. The Spartans also got nine points and eight rebounds from junior Sela Fisilau.

Iolani opened with an 18-8 lead behind a tough press and a stingy defense. Ten of their first-quarter points came off Maryknoll turnovers.

But the Spartans returned the favor in the second quarter. Maryknoll scored on consecutive Iolani turnovers to pull within two at 23-21. The Spartans took their first lead since the opening minutes of the game on two free throws from Fisilau with 14.7 seconds left in the half. But Keilyn Fujioka's second put-back attempt slipped through the net at the buzzer for a 26-25 Iolani lead.

Gravelle led the Raiders' offensive onslaught in the third quarter. She buried back-to-back 3s from the top of the arc to push the Iolani lead to 35-29. Maryknoll responded with two baskets, but Gravelle connected on a long jumper to stretch the Raiders' lead to 39-31.

"Ginger really hurt us with key shooting. Ginger shot the ball well tonight," Maryknoll coach Bobby Samson said. "They're a good team. They're well-coached and young."
